How Much Should You Tip on Pizza Delivery?

05aaee906blivery.jpg 150x34 How Much Should You Tip on Pizza Delivery?

From Slice Every week, Pizza Girl ( Diary of a Pizza Girl ) stops by with insights and a behind-the-scenes look into the world of pizza-delivery drivers. Take it away, PG! —AK I get asked a lot how much you should tip on pizza delivery. First, to stave off some objections, here’s the situation upon which my opinions are based. I work in a suburban area (and recently in a fairly rural area) in Texas. There are large labyrinthine subdivisions and apartment complexes. It can take me upwards of 15 minutes one way to get to a delivery. I have no idea about tipping in any other part of the country or in urban settings. “If you don’t like paying a tip, please go pick up your pizza.” There are lots of different numbers floating around there from “$2″ to “tip the same as you would a waiter” Here are my rules (and why): $3 minimum tip. This is 15% on a $20 order. It is not my fault if you ordered less than $20 worth of pizza. Between one and three pizzas is the exact same amount of…

2nd Day CNY

865f4ae43f6c0f96.jpg 112x150 2nd Day CNY

The 2nd day of CNY is when the married women bring their families to visit their parents. I used to tussle diplomatically with my MIL over the Reunion Dinner. Although I have three brothers, one is single and another sometimes can’t make it back from Singapore for the dinner. The remaining brother came back for the Reunion Dinners only while dad was alive. For reasons only he knows, and I know he’s reading this, he is considered ‘married off’ rather than ‘married in’. My sister goes back to her in laws in Sandakan. That means although my parents have 5 children, only my oldest bro and I will be around for CNY. And because of this, I would make an effort to eat at my parents’ house and then eat at my in laws’. After dad passed on, I still made sure to eat Reunion Dinner with my bro and mom, before going back to my in laws. She was upset initially but I stood my ground. Girls, we have as much rights as the guys to be with our parents! I wonder how other people manage this sensitive issue of which set of parents to eat Reunion Dinner with. I know some will have dinner with their own parents and siblings…

Homemade Glazed Doughnuts

22aebe40a378196c 150x99 Homemade Glazed Doughnuts

Let me begin this post by saying how excited I am to share this doughnut recipe with you. What can I say? Doughnuts are exciting. They thrill me to the bone. Second, let me lay one thing out on the table: Making good, raised doughnuts at home is not as easy as you’d think . For years (yes, you heard me) I tried in vain to make the perfect homemade doughnut—not just a fat, bready wad of fried dough with a sweet glaze, but a delicate, light ring of love with a slightly crispy surface and a wonderful flavor. Like “those doughtnuts”, and I don’t mean Krispy Kreme. I mean the doughnuts sold at the tiny doughnut dive in our small town. They’re the best raised doughnuts in the world. The shop is owned by an older resident of our town whose temperament can range from kind, welcoming, and gracious to a complete mirror of a certain soup purveyor in a certain long-running series starring a certain man with the last name of Seinfeld. Think I’m kidding? The doughnut guy in our town once made my summer babysitter…

Mango Fresh Cream Cake

dabbc3f3522595d9 114x150 Mango Fresh Cream Cake

MIL, Hub and Yi’s birthdays fall within 3 days consecutively, according to the Lunar calendar. We’ve become jaded with cakes recently, having celebrated many birthdays at the end the year. I thought of making my bountiful fresh fruit cream cake but the price of berries is just too high. And then I saw my favorite fruit, mangoes (well, they tie with durians as my fav) at only RM8 per kilo. I don’t know of anyone who doesn’t like mangoes so mango cake it was. I didn’t want a mango cake that when sliced will separate into layers because the mangoes don’t stick. I don’t like spongy mousse either. I was concerned about fresh dairy cream melting in our tropical island heat. I wanted something in between mousse and ordinary fresh cream and it had to hold up to the weather yet not be firm. In the end, I made a very light mousse, so light you can’t tell it’s mousse. Instead of just scattering diced mangoes over the fresh cream, I added a cup of mango puree and covered the whole cake …

Ming’s Beef, Mushrooms & Mixed Beans Soup

4600fe3f11c8eb4f 119x150 Mings Beef, Mushrooms & Mixed Beans Soup

Beef, mushrooms and mixed beans soup I really like our weather the past several days, with cloudy skies, light rain and cool afternoons of around 25 C and colder at night, the coolest days we’ve had in years. The only problem I have with such nice weather is the floods in the rural areas. Those in dreary grey places will not understand but if you live in hot sunny weather 365 days a year, you’ll welcome the rain and clouds like the Brits welcome the sun. This started out as ‘beef & barley soup with mushrooms and dill’ from a copy of Australian House & Garden but because Ming preferred mixed dried beans to barley, shiitake mushrooms are cheaper than button mushrooms (he loves mushrooms) and sherry reduced with the onions is one of his fav cooking secrets, he came up with a different soup but one that was so superb we (except for Wey, who probably is planning to run away from home soon–we’ve had a pork-free week) didn’t eat anything else but the soup for dinner last night. The only thing you can’t omit or substitute though is the dried porcini …

Can Braised Potatoes Put an End to the Mindless Rumblings?

60db6d3c203e3ad139c93dc2dbd7a102 Can Braised Potatoes Put an End to the Mindless Rumblings?

Braised Potatoes with Rosemary and Shallots I have heard the rumblings out there. Some of you think I have been getting a little off track lately. Maybe it’s just the collective growl of all your hungry tummies, or maybe it’s the beginning of a revolution. Most likely it’s the ranting of one lunatic with more than one email address. Only time will tell. But because I want you to know I listen to all of you, I have decided to stick with the food facts for today. Just the facts, all the facts you need to get this terrific potato dish onto the table in time for tonight’s dinner. But before I get down to brass tacks I will say that this is a particularly wonderful winter recipe. I brought it to these pages because some of the rumblings have accused me of being a little less than completely tolerant of those of you who are weather challenged. Some have even accused me a being a weather snob. Well if the short shorts fit… So where was I? Oh yes, the…

Here comes the Spotted Dog, although there is another name..

9b85b6eed701 150x103 Here comes the Spotted Dog, although there is another name..

Ooooohhhhh…when the weather outside is frightful and the wood stove is so delightful, consider making yourself a “Spotted Dog” or as some say “Spotted Dick”…dick being an old fashioned English word for pudding!!…as you can see from the title of this post I prefer dog…perhaps because I indeed do have a spotted dog!! SPOTTED DOG RECIPE Ingredients: 6oz/1 1/4 cups unbleached white flour 1 teaspoon baking powder 1/2 teaspoon salt zest of one lemon (preferably organic) juice of 1/2 lemon 6oz/ 3/4 cup sugar 6oz/ 3/4 cup plump raisins 2oz/ 3/4 cup shredded suet (yes I know in the mincemeat recipe I mentioned how grim it was to shred suet BUT I have to admit I thought it was grim but hadn’t actually done it..I bought some nice suet from Farmers Fare from local cows at Aldermere Farm and tried my hand and found it was somewhat akin to shredding soft candlewax…not gruesome at all really plus I tried one recipe with butter and suet and it came out a lot stodgier…ie dense and a bit too carby and sticky) 2 large eggs whisked together 3 fl oz/1/3 cup whole milk 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract/essence and 1 of cardamom 1/2 teaspoon of nutmeg Before you get going on the recipe you will need to find yourself a…

Cold Cow

3dbdd460e95937b7 150x99 Cold Cow

I guess it would be a little much to expect the cows on our ranch not to be miffed at the weather that’s hit our region. It’s three below zero this morning. It’s miserable.

Ten Weeks to Healthy in 2010

c2d50ef367in ten 150x71 Ten Weeks to Healthy in 2010

I know talking health and exercise isn’t my usual topic here, but it is something I aim for. I think I naturally gravitate towards healthy foods, especially during spring and summer when so much fresh produce is available and the weather is nice outside, but I do have a huge sweet tooth and I haven’t made a point for regular exercise. I’m not overweight. I don’t have serious health problems, high blood pressure, or bad cholesterol levels, but I do want to improve my health. I can be lazy though, I need motivation, and support, so that is why I joined RecipeGirl’s Ten in10 Challenge . The premise of the challenge is taking 10 weeks (starting January 2 nd ) to make changes for the better and develop healthy habits. We all have different goals, but we’re working together to meet the goals. Anyway can participate, whether you have a blog or not. Head over the RecipeGirl’s post to sign up and for more information. What are my goals? Eat more fruits and vegetables : This is easy for me in the spring and summer, but not so easy right now. I love fruit and vegetables, but I need to explore new varieties and recipes during these winter months. Drink more water: Take water with me when I’m out running errands for hours …
