VG & Suave Slav Hit The Big Apple: Part 3

Miss Part 1 ? Please click here . Miss Part 2 ? Please click here . **Tuesday, August 24th – Morning & Afternoon** Since the weather was actually cooperating on Tuesday morning ( no storms! score! ), Suave Slav and I headed out for a bit of sightseeing and shopping . And when I say sightseeing, I mean a trip down memory lane … This church/New York University-fusion building is located just a few steps from my old dorm. I always love visiting the area and reminiscing , and I appreciate Suave Slav accompanying me for the memory-lane trip as I shouted, ” Oh yeah! I remember this place! And look over there! I used to go there all the time! ” And then a Suave Slav mini photoshoot occurred in front of the church/NYU building :) We also checked out this art gallery – very cool layout! We then made our way over to Canal Street to shop… little did we know that shops did not open until 11:00am , so we had to stroll around a bit before anything was open. My favorite photo from this excursion is this one… If anyone can pull off that scarf, Suave Slav can . Time flies! …

Serious Grape: More Sauvignon Blanc Under $18

e2d29e877akstory.jpg 150x104 Serious Grape: More Sauvignon Blanc Under $18

Gorgeous, right? [Photograph: Warwick Wine Estate] Get Savvy (Blanc) New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc » Cheap Sauvignon Blanc » We crave tangy New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc, especially when the weather’s hot, but NZ winemakers aren’t the only ones making tasty wines from our beloved varietal. This week, we checked out a few more affordable bottles from around the globe, and were pleased to find a nice range of examples. A few expressed chalky minerality and balanced, fresh acidity, while others burst with tropical fruit flavors and grassy herbal notes. Top Picks Under $18 Menetou-Salon may not be quite as famous as Sancerre, but that’s all the more reason to know about it—Sauvignon Blanc from this region is often a pretty good value. We’re quite happy drinking the Domaine de Chatenoy Menetou-Salon (2008). It’s lively and bright, nicely integrated with a creamy minerality (though not quite the striking stoniness of Sancerre). It’s a lovely beach wine, with hints of tropical fruit and a bright acidity. Serve it with calamari or grilled octopus. Find this wine , $17-18. The Warwick Professor …

Feeding toddlers

8b566db1d0rooked.jpg 150x109 Feeding toddlers

Giving advice about children´s food is as useless as giving advice about unsuitable boyfriends. Just as all unsuitable boyfriends are the same, no two toddlers are alike, and just as your friend will not leave the fascinating cad just because you say so, so your precious darling will not like cabbage with nutella just because your friends´little one does. Also, embarrassingly, my daughter doesn´t have the dazzling, cute and varied diet. She eats most the same things every week, which is fine, really. Novelty is not the number one priority to a two year old who would only be too pleased to live off ice cream. No. Pía eats whatever we eat, more or less. Usually her dinner is what we had for lunch, which may be soup, risotto, pasta, beans or lentils. Two nights a week she has eggs, in the form of omelette, and they usually have some steamed broccoli on the side. A good get out of jail free card is a cheese toasted sandwich. And on Friday nights we make pizza, which is a great opportunity to smear everything with flour. In fact I´d say that cooking for a toddler is the same as cooking for an adult. It´s the logistics that are different. The important thing is …

One Girl Cupcakes at Bastille Day

de90628703724770.jpg 112x150 One Girl Cupcakes at Bastille Day

At Brooklyn’s Bastille Day celebration, One Girl Cookies had a tier of vanilla-vanilla and vanilla-chocolate cupcakes for sale. The spiky frosting caught my eye, and a few sprinkles gave nod to the holiday. The friendly staff gave me a vanilla-chocolate to try, after I was admiring the fact that the frosting was still sticking up well in the heat. The yellow cake was a bit dry after being exposed to the weather, but that didn’t hurt the the chocolate frosting, made with a creamy Callebaut ganache at a near 1:1 ratio of cake to frosting. Regular flavors include chocolate cakes with vanilla or chocolate frosting, and other flavors of the day.

French in a Flash: Pissaladière Pasta

71fe309e08ePasta.jpg 150x99 French in a Flash: Pissaladière Pasta

From Recipes [ Photographs: Kerry Saretsky ] Previously Homemade Merguez Boulettes » All French in a Flash recipes » This dish is sacrilege. Pissaladière is a sort of pizza, with a nest of sweet, burnished onions overlaid with a harlequin pattern of crossed anchovies and olive studs, atop a focaccia-like dough. Sicilian-style slices are for sale on the street corners of Nice, and it tastes like Nice: salty like the sea, with a touch of sweetness. This pasta starts with multigrain spaghetti, because I think the more substantial texture more accurately recalls the chewy pissaladière dough. It also echoes the earthiness of the Provençal flavors of thyme and bay. Then, I incorporate all the flavors of pissaladière: caramelized onions reduced down to a sweet, slithery mess. Eager fillets of anchovy. Niçoise olives. Olive oil. The resulting pasta is tenderly sweet and predominantly sea-salty. Like a mad scientist in one of my recipe-testing marathons, I made it as an experiment, and spun it around my fork as I snuck back to the fridge all day while concocting other recipes (shh…I don’t like to choose favorites!). It’s perfect for the warm weather, as you can eat it hot or room temperature, and goes so perfectly with a simple grilled or roasted piece of …

Hoof + Fin

The main draw of Hoof + Fin for us is it’s near-to-us Queen Village location, not the fact that we’re huge meat (hoof) or fish (fin) eaters. But we frequently pass the Argentinian inspired eatery that opened this past February in the space previously occupied by Gayle, and I scope Hoof + Fin’s menu (not current, but many dishes are still available) every time I stand outside of neighboring South Street Philly Bagels waiting for our dozen bagels to go. So…we decided to go in Hoof + Fin one evening. Hoof + Fin is a tight, tiny and dark rowhouse cave. The table candle had to be held to the menu and our food to get a good gander, as the Edison-style light bulbs just don’t kick out enough light. Volume levels are not dim, though. Dinner can be a shouting match on a packed evening. When the weather’s nice, perhaps you’ll be fortunate to snag a seat in their outdoor patio. Argentinian food, a cuisine that’s heavily influenced by Europe, is heavy on the beef, but there are still a few main…

Johnny Cupcakes T-Shirt Release Event

20428147ae0e6c13.jpg 150x112 Johnny Cupcakes T Shirt Release Event

Last Friday evening, a confluence of events made the perfect storm. It was nice spring weather. It was still spring break for many high schools and colleges and all the adults were too busy talking about the iPad to notice the big crowd lined up at 25 Howard Street in Soho for Johnny Cupcakes ‘ suitcase tour . I was surprised how many people there at 7:45PM, when the doors were to open at 8PM. Honestly, I was not the only one surprised. Johnny Cupcake himself was amazed too. He jumped on the Johnny Cupcakes van and promised to stay until everyone got a chance to come in. I spent my time scanning the crowd. Some people were wearing Johnny Cupcakes T-shirts. One guy I met had Johnny Cupcakes tattoo on his arm. Most of the fans were from New York area including Long Island, New Jersey and Connecticut. Here’s video of the line. Johnny Cupcakes T-shirt Release Video 1 from Nichelle Stephens on Vimeo . It was interesting to be a witness to a different subculture that was tangentially related to cupcakes. Most of the people who come to our events are not the same demographic that I saw Friday night which was younger and more male than female. Their passion and excitement was contagious, but instead of me staying …
