Grindcore House

A coffee house in Pennsport? You don’t say! And a vegan one, to boot! Grindcore House on the corner of Greenwich and 4th streets is bare bones, but retains it’s beautiful Philly rowhouse interior. A coffee bar and pastry case is the focus of the front room along with a chest-level ledge along the front window, and in back is a sitting room with a couch and tables at the end of a narrow walkway. The back room also serves as a space for artists. Currently PHL: Printers/Haters/Lovers anoints the walls. Live performances will also take place at Grindcore House. A Barrister bookcase filled with an array of vegan/veg, anarcho, and political books enriches the minds of the younger kids hanging in house that sing along to the mix of indie, punk, hardcore, and grindcore music that plays throughout the coffee house. As an older kid, I keep waiting to hear a track from my ex’s 80’s hardcore band. Grindcore House is a drop off point for Books Through Bars , an organization that sends books to prisoners, so be sure to send them your no longer needed books. In…

Is NYC Tap Water Vegan?

ff7bc22eb8water.jpg 138x150 Is NYC Tap Water Vegan?

[Somebody Call The Vegan Police! ] I don’t drink water. It doesn’t have any flavor. It isn’t fruit-colored and it doesn’t have tiny bubbles up all in it. Frankly, it would be better with a little bit of sugar in it. Or Aspartame. Now that’s delicious! Okay, okay, I’m joking. I love water. And, being from New York City: I love our tap water. It’s tasty. I was actually drinking some when I ran into this on Gizmodo: ” You Swallow These Invisible Shrimp With Every Gulp of NYC Tap Water. ” New York’s water is delicious—and filled with tiny crustaceans called “copepods”. (Making it possibly not kosher ) So. Like. Dude. If there’s little shrimpies in the water, does it mean that it’s not vegan? Wanna See a Vegan Panel at SXSW Next Year? Go Vote Now!

5911f1724ag Open.jpg 150x120 Wanna See a Vegan Panel at SXSW Next Year? Go Vote Now!

[Pick Panels Not Noses!] Remember when you learned about new music through those little booklets called “zines”? You read a short paragraph review of a record, took a gamble on it by sending your well-concealed cash to the distro, and a few weeks later the United States Postal Service delivered the record to your door? Well, South By Southwest (SXSW) has been around since those halcyon days, too, but it doesn’t mope around and wax nostalgic about the golden years prior to the Internet Revolution. Nowadays, it still organizes a bazillion live shows, as well as a film festival and a surprisingly diverse interactive portion that plays host to a slew of panels, such as those featuring bloggers who want to talk about blogging to other bloggers! Futuristic stuff! Our pal Stephanie of The Lazy Smurf’s Guide to Life has envisioned a panel for vegans to call their very own at the next SXSW in March 2011. Here’s the official description of ” Internet Activism Vegan Bloggers Take Over the World “: A surge of vegan bloggers has been using the internet to make change in the way people think about animals through new forms of activism. VeganMoFo (the vegan month of food) and worldwide…

Link Bait Alert: Being Tricked Into Eating Meat and Liking It

50a2f6e758yshore.jpg 150x99 Link Bait Alert: Being Tricked Into Eating Meat and Liking It

[I only write articles about the Jersey Shore; they're so HOT right now! ] Oh what horrific fingernails-against-a-chalkboard-type-tomfoolery you’ll find hiding behind salacious headlines. Whether it’s the assertion that “Soy Makes You Gay” or that “Oysters are Vegan” – sometimes an article is little more than a headline. Case in Point: Salon’s Life Stories piece entitled “I Was Tricked Into Eating Meat (and I liked it)” The story is simple: Vegetarian girl meets boy. Boy eats meat. Boy tricks girl into eating foie fras. Girl has “orgasm in her mouth”. Obviously deeper issues are at play here. The story is less about “being tricked into eating meat” than it is about control, body image and personal convictions. Way to go Salon! Seriously though, who gets “tricked” into eating meat? Village Voice Vegan Ice Cream Battle: Lula’s vs Stogo

fa22dfa461scoop.jpg 150x112 Village Voice Vegan Ice Cream Battle: Lulas vs Stogo

Two vegan ice cream parlors call the East Village home. Lula’s Sweet Apothecary and Stogo . The vegans I know are split down the center as to who puts out the superior product. I have actually never been to Stogo; I’m a Lula’s loyalist through and through. Rebecca Marx of the Village Voice put the two in a head to head battle to determine just who rules the East Village Vegan Ice Cream Scene . I encourage you to read the piece; it’s both in-depth and informative! For those of you who can’t be bothered with reading a few paragraphs of text or (like me) have blog-brain, here’s the results: [S]togo has its strong points — that bananas foster really is a thing of beauty — icy texture, slightly misleading flavor descriptions, and a cone moratorium left us cold. So although Lula’s Drumstick was a bit disappointing, the texture and flavors of its ice cream, as well as its generous portions and the choice to order a cone, allowed Lula’s to take victory in this battle. Score one for the Lula’s loyalists! [ Comments (3) | Read Comments and Add Your Own ]

SV Interview: A Q&A With Rip Esselstyn, the Brawn, and the Brains, Behind The Engine 2 Diet

7ce3bbdf14rip.jpg 125x150 SV Interview: A Q&A With Rip Esselstyn, the Brawn, and the Brains, Behind The Engine 2 Diet

I recently spent some time chatting with Rip Esselstyn , the Ironman triathlete and former firefighter behind The Engine 2 Diet . Rip filled me in on his partnership with Whole Foods, the real solution to the health care crisis and why Costa Rica is the country to be. ( Click here to check out my interview with Gene Stone, Rip’s cowriter on the book.) Roseann Marulli: Hi, Rip. I know you have a lot going on right now, so thanks for taking the time to speak with us. The book came out about a year ago, right? Rip: Let’s see—no, officially it came out February 25, 2009. Roseann: Okay, so it’s almost a year and a half now, and you’re still touring and talking to people. What’s the reception been like? Are people resistant because you’re asking them to take the things out of their diet that they think make life worth living: meat, cheese, the whole nine? Rip: If we’re talking America in general, yeah, they’re very resistant—most people are resistant to change, especially when it comes to food, and especially foods that they’re very comfortable with. But what I’ve been doing—as of late October, I …

Vegan Drinks XXVII, the Recap: Thanks, Terri!

1df30d1b2csmall.jpg 150x72 Vegan Drinks XXVII, the Recap: Thanks, Terri!

[Do you have pictures from the last Vegan Drinks? If so, please share them with us because our cameras are terrible. Share here, please: flickr.com/groups/vegandrinks ] The 27th Vegan Drinks was held on Thursday, July 29th, and although I wasn’t in attendance (I was taking the NJ bar exam instead), you all still managed to have an amazing time. (Kudos to Patrick of the Humane Society of the United States for acting as the substitute MC for the evening!) Craig and Michelle from Terri brought cupcakes, Thanksgiving, as well as bacon and cheese sandwiches, AND quesadillas. Thank you so much, Team Terri! (Friends, if you have yet to visit Terri, write yourself a note to go there tomorrow. Get a Butterfinger milkshake. It will make you forget Day 1 of the NY bar exam in record time. Promise.) Folks who lined up to make “Shout Outs” included: Matt of Mercy For Animals (MFA), who encouraged the crowd to volunteer with MFA to help promote veganism in one of its upcoming leafleting events; Stevie from Woodstock Farm Animal Sanctuary (WFAS) reminded everyone to volunteer (year-round!) and attend WFAS’s upcoming events while the farm is open for tours (until October!); Ethan of Sea Shepherd talked about …
