Serious Eats’ Culinary Ambassadors check in from time to time with reports on food fare in their homeland or countries of residence. ( Find out more about the program here. ) Last week people were asking where the love was for Canada. O, Canada, here you go. —The Mgmt. We do have a Canadian cereal! Well, from Manitoba, where I grew up. Growing up with British parents, a Saturday breakfast usually meant a full English (bacon, eggs, beans, sausage, grilled tomato, and toast). However, once I moved out with local Manitoban housemates I found there was a cereal made in Manitoba. It’s called Red River Cereal. It’s a very healthy breakfast made with whole grains and flax. It’s like porridge, and, like porridge, it needs lots of extra flavours to make it tasty. Traditionally it’s sweetened with brown sugar and milk, but you can add anything you would add to porridge, such as apple sauce, maple syrup, or fruits. Not sure how available it is outside of Manitoba, but I have never seen it in Toronto, where I now live, and many of my friends here have never heard of it. Ironically, it is made exclusively in Toronto now. My personal typical …

ebeabe97f8500px.jpg 150x111 New Hot Dog of the Week Prints for Sale

[ Photographs: Hawk Krall ] Every Friday we look forward to Hawk Krall ’s take on a different hot dog variation in his Hot Dog of the Week column—from traditional small town hot dog joints to bizarre South American concoctions. He now has four brand-new prints from recent posts for sale including: Brooklyn’s Torta De Salchicha in neon green, the Colombian Perro Caliente in Pepto Bismol pink, Toronto’s guilty pleasure street meat dogs and the classic Cincinnati Cheese Coney , printed due to overwhelming demand. These are 11-by-14-inch acid-free giclée prints on archival paper printed by Silicon Gallery Fine Art Prints in Philadelphia. Super high-quality with ultra bright colors, the prints look as good, or even better, than the original paintings. You can buy them for $29 each (plus shipping and handling) or a set of four for $100 on Hawk’s online store. Along with these new prints there are now a total of 16 different designs available, everything from the classic Chicago dog to Washington D.C.’s half-smoke and Seattle’s cream cheese hot dog: [Summaries written by Hawk Krall] Colombia might be a bit far to travel for a hot dog, but the…

Here’s a followup to last week’s post Haiti charity relief cupcakes . If you’re doing something special for Haiti relief related to cupcakes, leave it in the comments. We’ll try to update about special goings on but since so many companies and bakeries (yay!) are doing charity events, we obviously cannot post everything. via Upcoming , a benefit in Toronto: Cupcakes for Haiti is a grassroots fundraising effort in support of MSF/Doctors Without Borders. Spotted – Zen Kitchen, Ottawa

1d29e7c601c12b63 150x112 Spotted Zen Kitchen, Ottawa

Meet Dave and Caroline (pictured below). They are the friendly owners of Zen Kitchen , a gourmet vegan restaurant that pushes the envelope on vegan cooking. Before I share my meal from Zen Kitchen, I’d like you to get to know the masterminds behind the operation first. Caroline is also the Executive Chef of Zen Kitchen, and Dave is the manager & drink expert ;-) They are a warm couple who have a deep respect and affection for what they do. When I asked them who or what their biggest life influences were, this is what they said: Caroline : My mother for better or for worse. She was very hard to live with, but she had a strong passion for food and presentation, and was a woman with a good sense of style and taste. She was a perfectionist. She loved people, and presenting food to people. Both my mom and dad were great cooks. My passion for style and presentation came very early for me. Dave : Farley Mowat , whose books were instilled in me as a kid. He had a passion for protecting and caring for the natural world, but at the same time, maintained a good sense of …

Toronto cupcake meetup success!

637f7579fc4da3 d 112x150 Toronto cupcake meetup success!

THANK YOU to everyone who came out to The Drake Hotel for today’s cupcake meetup, and to The Drake Hotel itself, for such a lovely meetup! There were 8 of us and we feasted on the cupcakes below. I will post more of a proper roundup soon with more photos and shoutouts to everyone, but I had a great time and it was great to hear everyone’s different favorites and chat about cupcakes, baking, shopping, Toronto, and also walk down Queen Street West – we also visited the shop Champagne & Cupcakes, a clothing store, and stumbled upon the zombie walk. Much fun – I’d love to do it again next year. Special thanks to Juanita Koo of Sweet Things who also brought me custom cupcakes that are adorable – more on her in a future post.

Look how pretty I am! Lauren gets her ears pierced.

1fb8bb3bb608 150x112 Look how pretty I am! Lauren gets her ears pierced.

Okay, I’m ready… On your mark… I’ve wanted to take my youngest daughter to get her ears pierced since she was a baby but once she passed a certain age, I couldn’t do it anymore since I knew she wouldn’t understand and probably would be inconsolable. I’ll never know, but that’s just what I thought. I guess ear piercing for a girl could be equated to a boy having a circumcision procedure, no? Ok, probably not. But either way, more than likely, if you had a boy, you’d never as a child have to contemplate whether or not and when if you decided to have his ears pierced. Well, Lauren is a big girl now – almost four in less than 4 weeks! She decided on her own, as I let my eldest daughter, as to when she was ready to have her ears pierced. After all, I myself, didn’t have my ears pierced until I was 10! I have fond memories of my father taking me to the department store, Eaton’s down at the…
