I was delighted when I first came across this confection at Snacks! , a bodega in Seattle’s Ballard neighborhood. Unlikely as it may seem, the combination of toasted hot dog bun lined with peanut butter and jelly, then topped with ice cream is actually quite delicious—the light sweetness of the bun works nicely with the ice cream, with just enough sponginess to absorb the flavor of the ice cream, but sturdy enough that it will keep it contained for a sweet hand-held treat. Of course, it might get a bit messy toward the end, but isn’t that part of the fun of outdoor eating? Cook the Book: Pickled Ginger Peaches

From Recipes [Photograph: Caroline Russock] To those of you not familiar with this classic Southern pickle, adding copious amounts of vinegar and sugar to perfectly ripe summer peaches might sound a little strange. But bear with me here—the combination of vinegar, sugar, and a few choice spices turn summer peaches in to a spectacular pickle that can be enjoyed well after peach season is over. These Pickled Ginger Peaches from Put ‘em Up! vary a little from the classic by adding thinly sliced rounds of ginger to the pickling brine. The ginger pairs beautifully with the warm spiciness of the cinnamon, allspice, and cloves making this a pickle that can easily find it’s way into any part of the meal. Pairing the peaches with any sort of roasted meat is a given, especially a thick cut pork chop, but I can also see these peaches as a sweet-tart topping for a bowl of vanilla ice cream or even a quick filling for a cobbler or crumble finished with a dollop of sweet whipped cream. Back To My Roots

While flipping through some old family albums, I stumbled upon the following photo ( potential blackmail ): Circa 1990 ; from left to right: My grandfather, VeggieDad, VeggieMom, VeggieGirl ( yes, that is me! ), and my grandmother ( may she rest in peace ). I have never been one to plaster a smile on my face “just to do it.” I never sugarcoat anything , nor do I hide who I am or what I am feeling. This photo proves that fact about me – I am a no-nonsense girl . And apparently I was not thrilled with the photographer or with the idea of posing for a photo ;) In addition to reminiscing about life, myself, and getting in touch with my family roots, I have been enjoying another type of “root” lately : My current “snack obsession” : a baked sweet potato with cinnamon & coconut butter ( I highly recommend the Artisana brand of coconut butter ). My raw foods counselor Gena ( from the “Choosing Raw” blog/website) introduced me to the combination since I am now incorporating more cooked root vegetables into my diet, in preparation for the colder months ahead . It is incredibly nourishing, satisfying, and “holy yum”-worthy. Even as my life continues to get busier and a little stressful with schoolwork, exams, and other activities …

Mm, soda can sweat. I’m not a big fan of soda. Sort of. By that I mean don’t drink it regularly and I’m not addicted to any one kind. (This is where some of my coworkers might point out that I’m the only one in our office drinking the free bottles of Mountain Dew Throwback sitting in a giant box on the floor, but…it’s right there! And it’s free! I wouldn’t actually buy Mountain Dew. I think.) But there’s something about grape soda that I really like, thus causing me to buy a can during my recent visit to Di Fara . Does it taste like grape? Hell no—it tastes like artificially flavored grape candy. In turn, grape candy reminds me of being a kid, in particular going to summer camp and eating whatever candy they provided me with. Why this triggers a comforting feeling I don’t know, considering that I rarely drank grape soda …
