Rue McClanahan Dead at 76

Rue McClanahan, actress, star of stage and screen, vegan and ardent animal rights activist died today of a Massive Stroke; she was 76. She’ll forever be remembered as the saucy southern belle Blanche Devereaux from the hit 1980’s sitcom “The Golden Girls” . Here’s an amazing quote from Ms. McClanahan: “Compassion is the foundation of everything positive, everything good. If you carry the power of compassion to the marketplace and the dinner table, you can make your life really count.” Rest in peace Blanche; stay golden. SV Interviews Moby! Gristle Book Launch Party in Bklyn This Tuesday 4/6

ccb14e1425flier.jpg 100x150 SV Interviews Moby! Gristle Book Launch Party in Bklyn This Tuesday 4/6

Moby is a successful musician and DJ. He’s an outspoken vegan and animal advocate–and a dedicated New Yorker. Moby hit my radar over a decade ago when he released his CD Animal Rights . I was struck by the title, of course, and found it an energetic, righteous manifesto full of indignation and surprisingly hummable melodies. A few years later he gained international acclaim with the release of Play . Moby is now expanding on his long history of animal advocacy with Gristle , a collection of essays by animal advocates and experts, co-edited with Miyun Park. Miyun is a long-time animal advocate and Executive Director of Global Animal Partnership . Written for meat-eaters and animal activists alike, Gristle is a short, readable book that packs in a comprehensive overview of the issues. Come party with Moby and Miyun on Tuesday April 6 in Brooklyn to celebrate the launch of Gristle . Moby answered SuperVegan’s burning questions via email. Q: What inspired you and Miyun to come up with the idea for Gristle ? Moby: We realized that most people were unaware of the horrifying consequences and ramifications of factory farming. What does a world without animal exploitation look like to you? Simply: better. A world where people and animals and the environment are all…

SuperVegan To Be Featured in Time Out New York

7d9987d1d0t logo.jpg 150x102 SuperVegan To Be Featured in Time Out New York

Editor’s Update: Clearly Rudy made some very inappropriate statements in this blog post and in his interview with Time Out. We are leaving the post up in the interest of transparency, but please note that we have fired “Brownbird” Rudy “Relic” and will be making other changes to address such inappropriate anti-vegan behavior at SuperVegan . New York City is a bastion of imagination; a city that literally thrives on creativity. SuperVegan is lucky to be a part of that dichotomy. Next week’s Time Out New York will spotlight the blogs that make NYC special and we’re fortunate to be included! Here’s a sneak peek at our interview! What Makes SuperVegan super? That we are a not just a blog, but a community too, plus we have the best New York City restaurant guide in the world . Our content is lively and fun. We try to stay away from all of the animal rights BS out there and try to focus on the enjoyable things about being a vegan in NYC. We leave all the crazy protest-type stuff to the militant goose-steppers – that’s not us. What’s the biggest misconception about Veganism? That honey is not vegan. There’s plenty of debate out there for and against it; thankfully the general consensus is that honey is vegan…

When April Fools Goes Wrong: An Apology for the Inapproprite Posts of "Brownbird" Rudy "Relic"

43c9e907basrsbns.png 126x150 When April Fools Goes Wrong: An Apology for the Inapproprite Posts of "Brownbird" Rudy "Relic"

[SuperVegan's new slogan] Today, SuperVegan blogger Brownbird Rudy Relic posted an excerpt from SuperVegan’s upcoming interview in Time Out New York . In it, Rudy complains about the “animal rights BS” that pervades the vegan community. We want to assure our readers that this interview was done without SuperVegan’s knowledge or permission, and that we don’t approve of anything contained within it. (Also, we know that honey isn’t vegan. Carmine is vegan, and silk is arguable, but there’s no way honey is.) We’ve read your angry emails and comments, and we want you to know that we understand and agree. To that end, we are using this post to publicly announce that “Brownbird” Rudy “Relic” will no longer be writing for SuperVegan . We are simply fed up with his incessantly frivolous blog posts , not to mention his obscenely unhealthy artery -clogging recipes . And we’re pretty sure that whatever gunk he puts in his hair can’t be vegan. Furthermore, we recognize that Rudy isn’t the only culprit, and that this culture of frivolity has degraded SuperVegan for years. Therefore, within the coming weeks, we will be conducting training sessions with the rest of our staff, under the leadership of noted activist Bevin Cass-Campbell . Hopefully most of our bloggers can adapt, but we won’t ruleout replacing them with writers…

Cherchez la femme!

It seems that French chefs may feel there are too many women in the kitchen as they are gunning to remove at least one of them. Christine Pujol is head of the French Chefs Association and she has been holed up inside her Paris office for six days, refusing to come out. She disputes an emergency congress of the Union des Métiers et des Industries de L’Hôtellerie (UMIH) which dismissed her in November. “I don’t want to over-dramatise or seem ridiculous,” she said. “But the justice system refuses to respond to the violation of my rights.” In recent months French chefs have taken to kidnapping their bosses in protest at job losses. But Ms Pujol has beaten them to it, vowing to stay in situ until the UMIH reverses a vote to replace her with Roland Héguy, a restaurant-owner from Biarritz. “This is a case for a psychiatrist,” a senior member of the union told the paper. “She has taken herself hostage.” Ms Pujol was voted out after restaurant owners became angry over what they believe is the …

Thai Bird Chili Wings, Please Pass The Napkins

e116bcca38sweb 0.jpg 150x150 Thai Bird Chili Wings, Please Pass The Napkins

Wings are messy, and that’s a good thing. Wings remind us that it’s okay to be a carnivore. They remind us of a simpler time sitting around the cave with that trendy new cooking device someone cleverly named “fire”. Remember how proud you were to be the first neanderthal on the block with an indoor inferno? But there is more to wings than primitive domination of lesser creatures. Wings have more modern pleasures as well. Wings make it okay to dribble hot sauce all over those brand new $245 jeans. Because stains only make them better, right? Wings make kids and grandmas alike stick their face in their food and giggle while the eat. But the best thing about wings is the way you feel after you have devoured an entire plate full. No need to feel guilty in overindulgence. Because bragging rights are the best part about eating wings. Not only is it cool to pig out on wings. It’s a badge of honor. Eating 4 or 5 wings may fill you up, but eating 20 or 30 moves you to the head of the table; often to rowdy cheers, chants, hoots and hollars! And it’s not just quanity that earns respect either. Because there is also that illustrious look of awe…

Meet My Rockin’ Midwife & Why I’m Choosing a Home Birth

39deac918e401 132x150 Meet My Rockin’ Midwife & Why I’m Choosing a Home Birth

Today, I’m introducing you to the midwife who will be in attendance at my home birth. Her name is Shell Walker ( here’s her website , which is under construction right now, but still has some information on it), and let me just start by saying that she is so great. She’s sweet, smart, capable, experienced, responsive, cool, and a perfect fit for my needs. Midwives have been attending home births for a long, long time. In fact, a majority of births in many parts of the world use midwives and home births for the norm as opposed to hospital births, unlike our country which relies on hospitals. I recognize that hospitals can have their place in some births and they can very much be needed at times, but for the most part… a healthy woman can birth successfully in the comfort of her home, and in some cases have better outcomes than if she went to the hospital. Here is an article detailing a Canadian study discussing the safety of home births with midwives. I find that when I tell people I’m planning to birth at home, I get looks of either shock or disbelief. Then, I find myself…
