The centre-right City Council of Bergamo have refused the organisers of a photography show called “Baci Rubati“ [“Stolen Kisses”] permission to exhibit in the city centre. The reason is that the show includes images of same-sex couples kissing.

Cook the Book: ‘Edible: A Celebration of Local Foods’

30fd80dc55lfoods.jpg 114x150 Cook the Book: Edible: A Celebration of Local Foods

One of my favorite food-related periodicals doesn’t come to me in the mail monthly, and doesn’t even require a paid subscription. Edible is a network of locally based food magazines that are free to readers at a number of restaurants and specialty food shops. With a staggering 62 magazines being published seasonally in areas ranging from Bozeman, Montana to Hawaii and Louisville , Edible has been reporting on local foodways, producers, and restaurants since 2002, and more Edible publications are sprouting up each year. Gorgeous photography and intelligent writing combined with delicious regional recipes have made Edible into one of the most exciting food-related periodicals out there but since the issues are only distributed locally, getting your hands on a copy of Edible Cape Cod isn’t an easy task if you live outside of the area. Thankfully, for all of the Edible readers out there who are curious about what other editions of the magazine are all about, co-founders Tracey Ryder and Carole Topalian have recently published Edible: A Celebration of Local Foods , a collection of articles taken from various editions of Edible profiling farmers, chefs, and artisans from around the country along with comprehensive…

Two Days Left to Nominate for the 2010 Wine Blog Awards

9233269113A logo.jpg 150x112 Two Days Left to Nominate for the 2010 Wine Blog Awards

If you’re reading this, you most likely understand the point of a wine blog in the first place. You’re out there (here? everywhere?) enjoying finding out about wine and exploring your passion in a new medium. Chances are, if you’re like many readers, this is only one of several wine blogs that you read, or at least check in with from time to time. We wine bloggers thank you for your continued support, and in that spirit of support I would like to urge you to participate in the fourth annual Wine Blog Awards . Originally conceived and hosted by wine PR guru Tom Wark , the awards have been handed off to the Open Wine Consortium to run this year. While some changes have been made (most notably the deletion of the modifier “American” from the awards, thankfully) this set of awards still generally aims to recognize the best of what the English-language wine blogging world has to offer. But the awards need input from the most important people in the process: the people who actually read them. The organizers are currently taking nominations in various award categories (8 in all). What I need you to do…

I’ve had so much fun—more fun than I ever could have imagined—holding the PW Photography Assignments over the past several months. From the Holiday Bokeh assignment to the Cat Photo assignment of last week (I’m still in Heaven over that one; see winner above), I’ve considered it a complete privilege to be able to browse the thousands of incredible shots you’ve all shared with the group. I can’t wait for the next assignment!

Figgy Buckwheat Scones

I’ve been waiting for months to write this post. The better part of a year, even. I’m positively itching to share this with you, so here we go. Late last summer (the lovely, gracious, talented) Luisa Weiss let me spend some time with the proofs of a baking book she was working on. She said she thought I’d like it. Which, it tuns out, was a dramatic understatement. The book she shared with me, Good to the Grain , is about baking with whole grain flours. It was written by Kim Boyce , and photographed by Quentin Bacon . There aren’t many people writing contemporary books on whole grain baking. Among those few, this one is special. In a sentence, a top-flight pastry chef intersects whole grain flours in her home kitchen. To back up a bit, Kim is a former pastry chef with major chops (Spago / Campanile) who left the professional kitchen to raise her family. Her book delves into her exploration of a broad range of whole grain flours, each of the twelve main chapters explores a separate flour – whole-wheat flour, amaranth flour, …
