Butter Lane cupcake popup shop in SoHo (NYC) through December 31st

My iPhone is still giving me photo difficulty so until I get that resolved/have my digital camera handy, words will have to suffice. (There’s a cute photo of the outside at the blog pork & chocolate .) It’s snowing and very cold in New York, so I was grateful to get some hot spiced apple cider ($2) at the Butter Lane popup shop in SoHo at 436 West Broadway, just south of Prince. It’s decorated with their boxes and logo and they have a different variety of their fresh, delicious, organic cupcakes every day. I tried one with chocolate cake and blueberry frosting, topped with actual blueberries ($3). I rarely get chocolate cake there because I’m so passionate about their banana cake (which, in my opinion, doesn’t even need frosting) and their vanilla cake, but this time I did and it was delicious; rich and moist, and a little crumbly, in a good way. The shop is open through December 31st, so New Yorkers and visitors, check it out while you can. Their delivery bike is even for sale! They’re open 11-6 daily. Follow them on Twitter (@butterlane) to find out which flavors they’re offering in SoHo daily. Regular flavors and longer hours at their East Village store.

I heart Spot Dessert Bar

87b8ef163142e5 d 112x150 I heart Spot Dessert Bar

Spot Dessert Bar is the new home of former Batch proprietor Pichet Ong. Melissa posted about their cupcake offerings , but I finally got to check them out over the weekend and am so excited about this cozy spot on St. Mark’s Place. I will post more about all their cupcake offerings and constantly-updated desserts (Vietnamese coffee ice cream!) but for now, this photo of their green tea cupcakes will have to suffice (jam filling not shown). Cupcakes are $2.75 each and well worth it (and when I was there Sunday night they were thinking of starting to offer mini cupcakes, which I highly encourage!). Follow them on Twitter (@SpotDessertBar) too. Another post about Spot will be coming very soon, but I wanted to share this because it’s so good, you should check it out (though I caution that Saturday night it’s very crowded, but you can still walk in and get cupcakes to go). See more photos in my Flickr set . Spot Dessert Bar 13 St. Mark’s Place New York, NY 10003 212-677-5670 contact at spotdessertbar.com

CakeWalk: A little bon appetit for you, a big Bon Appetit for me

a4c8bf0f82pears 150x127 CakeWalk: A little bon appetit for you, a big Bon Appetit for me

CakeWalk is a weekly column by Mary Ann Porch dedicated to every baker who has ever struggled to achieve the right consistency with their icing, unsuccessfully searched for the perfect cupcake topper or just wants to learn something new. Because with a few helpful tips, cupcakes are a cakewalk. As mentioned before, food blogging is a hobby for me as in I don’t really make any money from it. The gratification that I’ve finally found an outlet that lets me express myself as well as create physical things (cakes, anyone?)is enough. But it’s pretty kick ass when you get a little recognition. For me, this recognition came in the form of an invitation to an exclusive Bon Appetit blogger party. Only 25 bloggers were invited, so I’ve been feeling pretty good since I stopped hyperventilating from excitement upon receiving the invite. I was asked to bring a baked good to the party as part of the contest element of the event. Trained chefs and Editor-in-Chief Barbara Fairchild publicly eating (and possibly publicly ridiculing) said dessert were on the agenda for the evening, and …

Treat’s chocolate banana cupcakes and more custom logo cupcakes

a94511d0ee4b o d 150x100 Treats chocolate banana cupcakes and more custom logo cupcakes

And these are the chocolate banana cupcakes that I bought from New York City custom cupcake company Treat …also delicious! The chocolate on top was a thin layer of very rich chocolate and the banana cake was kindof like a banana muffin, in a good way, dense and delicious. And while I’m here…me and Treat owner Harley with the custom cupcakes with my face, and another closeup. I can justify this not as narcissism but as a recommendation of somewhere to get custom image cupcakes; I had actually asked around local bakeries a while ago and hadn’t found anyone in Manhattan willing to do it (I believe Ivy Bakery in Brooklyn does offer this). So yes, check out Treat if you want your face (or logo, or your dog’s face, or whatever) on a cupcake.

400 mini cupcakes = 1 giant Halloween pumpkin

ebcd3005fb0de7d9 93x150 400 mini cupcakes = 1 giant Halloween pumpkin

New York’s mini cupcake comopany Baked by Melissa has a fun Halloween cupcake promotion going on. The above version is the 400 mini cupcake pumpkin cake; click here to see the smaller sizes and ordering info. WOW. $280 is a lot of money, but 400 cupcakes are a lot of cupcakes. I think I can safely say that if you had this pumpkin at a Halloween party, people would be very excited to be at your party. Order by calling 212-842-0220 by October 30th. They also have two new flavors: mint chocolate chip and cinnamon. I don’t have my own photo yet but I will soon (see the official photos here ), because my iPhone wouldn’t behave when I tried them. Mint chocolate chip is exactly what it sounds like, and is very minty (which I like). The cinnamon was a surprise to me; it’s very sweet, I’m not quite sure what the frosting is but I’m looking forward to trying it again. I didn’t know if I’d like it but I wound up enjoying it. I have to force myself not to shove the entire mini

OMG! OMG Cupcakes are delicious, especially the vegan gluten-free Mounds

90a7cc6f6abd3276 112x150 OMG! OMG Cupcakes are delicious, especially the vegan gluten free Mounds

After reading about their vegan gluten-free Mounds cupcake, I emailed New York cupcake delivery company OMG Cupcakes about placing an order. They kindly offered to comp me a dozen cupcakes, and they delivered the assortment you see below to me the next day. Quite often, I share my cupcakes and I don’t try them all. I was planning to share the assorted cupcake package I received, but I was compelled to try each and every one because they were each so intriguing (please note: I did not eat 12 entire cupcakes, but I did taste them all…and ate the entire Mounds and was tempted to eat the other one). The flavors stand out, for one thing. Mounds is very much Mounds: coconut sprinkled on chocolate frosting and coconut in the cake. Chocolate peppermint is unmistakably chocolate peppermint. Which is as it should be, and yet sometimes when you bite into a cupcake, it’s hard to tell exactly what’s happening. Or it’s good the first second it hits your tongue and then becomes less delicious as you eat it. These were all very good. Some I liked more than others, but I appreciate the high quality and uniqueness of them. One I’d never tried before was lemon-lime – interesting combination. The chocolate fudge brownie cupcake…

Magnolia Bakery to open at Grand Central

That’s the scoop from Magnolia Bakery owner Steve Abrams in this ABC News article on New York City cupcakes. I can’t reprint the text but check it out for a pretty decent overview of what’s going on in this city, though do make sure to check out our NYC links for custom cupcakes that ROCK and some that are not in Manhattan but also rock.
