[I only write articles about the Jersey Shore; they're so HOT right now! ] Oh what horrific fingernails-against-a-chalkboard-type-tomfoolery you’ll find hiding behind salacious headlines. Whether it’s the assertion that “Soy Makes You Gay” or that “Oysters are Vegan” – sometimes an article is little more than a headline. Case in Point: Salon’s Life Stories piece entitled “I Was Tricked Into Eating Meat (and I liked it)” The story is simple: Vegetarian girl meets boy. Boy eats meat. Boy tricks girl into eating foie fras. Girl has “orgasm in her mouth”. Obviously deeper issues are at play here. The story is less about “being tricked into eating meat” than it is about control, body image and personal convictions. Way to go Salon! Seriously though, who gets “tricked” into eating meat? Sandwiched between I-287 to the west and its namesake Jersey City Reservoir to the east, there’s not much else around but a quiet residential neighborhood and a small industrial park. But people do find it, as evidenced by the crowd there on a Saturday afternoon at 5:30 p.m. The parking lot was absolutely packed — and packed with a diversity of vehicles (work-battered pickup trucks, new BMWs, old Hondas, Chevys, Fords, Mini Coopers) that suggests this pizzeria draws people from all walks of life. I always take that as a sign of a good pizzeria. I added my rented Zipcar to the mix and lined up for a table. [ Flickr: @rgs ] My parents were afraid of many things when I was growing up, especially spiciness. My mother was the sort of person who ordered from the “American” menu at Mexican restaurants. My father will eat in only two restaurants in New Jersey, and one in New York City. The day they uncharacteristically took me to a Chinese restaurant they came to regard as a dark day in my childhood history. I ate what was described on the menu as tofu and vegetables in Hunan sauce. The thick, spicy yet sweet sauce was better than dessert. I was fascinated with the textures of the protein and the different vegetables. Ever after, when I asked if we could “do” Chinese, my parents would say “it was such a mistake we took you to that Ruby Palace.” Didn’t I understand their creed that “dinner” was a slab of steak, fish, or pasta slathered in red sauce? [ Photograph: GQ.com ] GQ ’s Alan Richman last week wrote an entertaining, makes-you-wanna-go-there-right-away piece about Santillo’s Brick Oven Pizza in Elizabeth, New Jersey: I asked Lorraine [Santillo] which pizza she preferred, and she recommended a 1957/’64. Allow me to explain. A lot of the specialty pies are named for the years in which they were conceived, starting with the 1940, which is a plain tomato pie without cheese. The 1957/’64 is the 1957 crust (extra thin) with the 1964 toppings (mozzarella, parmesan, olive oil). It was wonderful, but I preferred Al’s standard crust, especially when left in the oven a little longer than usual for added crispness. Al loves playing with crusts, sometimes leaving them in the steel pans until done, sometimes sliding them onto the bottom of the brick oven, sometimes cooking them a little less, sometimes a little more. If you’re taking your pie home (or to Vasco Da Gama), he will cook them a little longer so the steam that saturates the box doesn’t make the pies soggy.
