“In the pun-filled flavor world of Ben & Jerry’s ice cream, Brownie Chew Gooder is a classic, at least in name alone.” [Photographs: Brad Thomas Parsons] Recently Ben & Jerry’s released an exclusive Flourless Chocolate Cake flavor available only at Walmart. (Technically, the flavor isn’t a true Walmart exclusive, but Walmart seems to be the only place where you can actually find this “Limited Batch.”) This unlikely partnership immediately sparked some concern among the Serious Eats community, and even as the pros of this partnership were brought up, many people seemed to overlook the merits of the flavor itself. And now, Ben & Jerry’s kicks off summer with two new flavors: Berry Voluntary and Brownie Chew Gooder, which you’ll only find at another big-box retailer, Target. And if the names didn’t give it away, this partnership helps foster volunteerism. You can visit Scoop It Forward to identify volunteering opportunities in your local community. And to sweeten the deal, after you make your volunteer promise you can earn a coupon for a free pint of Ben & Jerry’s, redeemable at Target (while supplies last).* *Dear Ben & Jerry’s, why isn’t any of this information on your website? Ben and Jerry’s Flavor Graveyard

VIEW SLIDESHOW: Ben and Jerry’s Flavor Graveyard One of the best and worst things about Ben & Jerry’s: they’re always introducing new flavors. But with that comes some rough goodbyes. Just when you start falling for Bovinity Divinity (milk chocolate ice cream and white chocolate cows swirled with white chocolate ice cream and dark fudge cows—retired in 2001) it’s nowhere to be seen in freezers. Just like that. Gone. Forever. You and your spoon, so alone. If you ever tour the Ben and Jerry’s factory in Waterbury, Vermont, stroll over to their Flavor Graveyard. It’s an actual graveyard—as in, there are headstones and it’s on a grassy knoll. And if you really wanted to, you could probably leave a bouquet. So let’s take a moment of silence to remember these late flavors. Will they ever come back? Why must they leave? Ben & Jerry’s Grand Poobah of PR (seriously, his business card says that) Sean Greenwood says probably not. Unfortunately, these flavors just didn’t sell as well. However, some of them might still be available at Ben & Jerry’s scoop shops, just not in pints at stores (like Coffee, Coffee, BuzzBuzzBuzz!). If you can’t make…

Ben & Jerry’s Free Cone Day: Tuesday, March 23

b6de5f7d69oneday.jpg 102x150 Ben & Jerrys Free Cone Day: Tuesday, March 23

It comes but once a year: Free Cone Day at Ben & Jerry’s. If you’re near a participating location on Tuesday, March 23, between noon and 8 p.m., wait in line (likely one that snakes around the block, but moves fairly quickly) and get your free scoop! If you’re lucky, they’ll have some of the new 2010 flavors: Boston Cream Pie, Dulce Delish, Maple Blondie, Mud Pie, Peanut Brittle, and our most favorite of all, Milk & Cookies. Find a Ben & Jerry’s near you here. A little Free Cone Day history: it all started in 1979 when co-founders Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield scooped free ice cream all day as a “thank you” to customers for supporting them in their first near. Now it’s become an annual event, and practically a holiday.
