Sweet Treats: Chocolate Peanut Butter Swirl Cheesecake

4e23b69e08secake 150x100 Sweet Treats: Chocolate Peanut Butter Swirl Cheesecake

If you are anything like me, this is the perfect dessert for this time of year. It’s the first week of February and every time I step outside I shiver with delight at the winter wonderland of sparkling snow and am thrilled anew by my frosty puffs of breath as I sit in my car in my pjs waiting for my children. All the holiday bills were paid before the first toy broke and I am five pounds below my goal weight. OK this is actually the perfect dessert to snarf after waking up from that dream. And what a dream it is. Because February is just the worst: it’s cold, I’m crabby, I’m fat and I’m broke (and fat) and as a bonus, the kids get the last week of the month off. Yaaaay! So seriously, if you are anything like me, this is the perfect dessert. Put on your yoga pants, grab a fork and turn on Bravo. Spring will be here in just 3 months. Julie’s Chocolate Peanut Butter Swirl Cheesecake adapted from The Whimsical Bakehouse by Kaye Hanson and Liv Hanson because I’m not crazy…

Vanuatu: Au Péché Mignon

7f140631c62copy 150x100 Vanuatu: Au Péché Mignon

Incredible tarte banane , 350VT Au Péché Mignon was one of our favourite finds during our trip to Vanuatu, and we returned more times during out 10-day trip than I care to admit! This very French café is located on Lini Highway, next to Prouds the Jewellers and opposite the Iririki island ferry. You can’t miss it. Despite being previously colonised by the French (and the English) at various times, Vanuatu was a lot less French than I expected it to be. Even though everyone learns French and English at school, I heard very few people speaking French, apart from the few French tourists and expats that we saw. I think one of the factors must be the huge (and I mean HUGE) influx of Aussie and Kiwi tourists. There are still French influences around (restaurants, cafes, shops, the Alliance Francaise), and I found that locals would respond in French if you were to speak to them in French. But anyway, back to the café! It’s quite hot and humid on the inside, so I recommend grabbing a table on the balcony. They sell drinks, ice-cream, a large array of pastries (individual and whole cakes), as well as crepes and baked…

FOCACCIA FARCITA – STUFFED FOCACCIA

b5822c71851960s 150x112 FOCACCIA FARCITA – STUFFED FOCACCIA

Whew! We’ve made it through all the holiday baking, all the breads and puddings, the cookies galore, the coffee cakes and scones, the fruitcakes, stollen, pannetone and gingerbread. The gifts have been opened and enjoyed, the wrapping paper and rolls of ribbon put away until next year, the champagne drunk and the oysters eaten. Now, as we plop down into our favorite armchair near the fire, rub our post-holiday tummy contentedly and stare at our long list of New Year’s Resolutions we stoutly declare to anyone who will listen “The diet starts today!” Well, no, not quite yet, my friends. I recently received an e-mail from my charming friend Zorra of Kochtopf , the founder and creator of my favorite monthly baking event, Bread Baking Day , asking me if I would like to host January’s BBD event! “Why, Zorra, I would love to!” I exclaimed! “After all, January is a special month for me!” And here I am, your hostess! Now, I only need to choose a theme for BBD #26… To get an excellent idea of what Bread Baking Day is …

Christmas Eve Dinner (with a whole lot of cookies)

68b0b6ada688 150x99 Christmas Eve Dinner (with a whole lot of cookies)

Dinner 12/24 Cabbage & Dill Pierogi Mushroom & Potato Pierogi Braised Carrots Grilled Asparagus Potato, Pear and Dried Cherry Salad with Maple Syrup Vinaigrette Dessert Blondies Korova Cookies Thumbprint Jam Cookies Clothespin Cookies Eggnog Cookies If it’s Christmas Eve, then it’s Cabbage & Dill, and Mushroom & Potato Pierogi. Rounding out the plate was braised carrots and grilled asparagus. We started off with the salad, a combination of hot creamy fingerling potatoes, crisp pears and tart cherries tied together with a maple syrup vinaigrette. A big bowl of yum! Before the cookies, here’s a palate cleansing look at the holiday table from both sides, starting from the right hand side… …and one from the left. After the Holiday Party XIII last week, there was a great deal of re-arranging chairs, tables and decorations for the table. What’s that on the back table by the window? Cookies? Why, yes! Top to bottom: Eggnog Cookies (adapted from Tish Boyle’s “The Good Cookie”), Thumbprint Jam Cookies, Korova (a.k.a. World Peace) Cookies (adapted from Dorie Greenspan) Close-up of the eggnog cookies (using soynog, of course). These require patience as you need an even number (to match the top and bottom) and a deft hand with the tiny “star” cookie cutters …

So. Recovering?

31c582c2a1iberte 150x92 So. Recovering?

After the dinner I had last night (ham, turkey, and all the fixin’s), it was all I could do but have a cup of yogurt for breakfast and then get about my chores for the day. [ Photograph: Michele Humes ] I had planned yesterday to put up a post this morning asking how it all went. But I should have known someone in Talk would beat me to the punch: Back from the Front — Holiday Meal Report . Some of the stuff reported in that thread is shocking (“tasted like the vacuum of outer space”). So head on over there to debrief. But right here, I’m curious as to what you’re doing today. Do you still have people over? Are you still going all out? Or is today a day of rest and recuperation? What’s your post-holiday game plan?
