6d9fec52dcspx 2.jpeg 150x112 VG & Suave Slav Hit The Big Apple: Part 1

As I hinted in my last post and VGTV episode , I took a very special trip for a few days with a very special guest. The place ? New York City. Of course :) The special guest ? Slava, who is well-known on this blog already as “the dance partner.” Through this blog post series, you will get to know Slava better than as just being “the dance partner,” since he is worthy of a better recognition. By the way, Suave Slav is now his nickname on the blog ( in case you did not figure that out… ) Other special guests ? The VeggieFolks and great, REAL-LIFE FRIENDS ( not random meet-ups ) in the city. Now that the introductory details are taken care of, let us officially kick off the newest blog post series, VG & Suave Slav Hit The Big Apple . **Sunday, August 22nd** At approximately 9:45am, my parents, Slava, and I set off to begin our NYC adventures . We also had to endure a very turbulent, nausea-inducing flight… but otherwise it was a…

Barbecue Event Roundup: Contests, Cookouts, and Festivals in the United States

8f86013c1eg cows.jpg 150x100 Barbecue Event Roundup: Contests, Cookouts, and Festivals in the United States

[ Photograph: Adam Kuban ] I am on an eternal quest for the next great smoke house, tracking barbecue’s many variations across a scattered landscape of small restaurants handed the burden of preserving culinary history. The United States of Barbecue, however, represents more than just billows of smoke rising from a brick-and-mortar joint. My first trip to Memphis in May taught me that lesson, exposing me to the world of barbecue events, a vast expanse of competitions and festivals rooted in the social aspects of this gastronomic tradition. In its new season, The Learning Channel’s “BBQ Pit Masters” places a heavy focus on the competitive element of barbecue culture. Media coverage tends to focus on the competitive barbecue circuit, where cash prizes and championship narratives sometimes steal the spotlight from the spirit of community that underscores every good cookout. In fact, the sanctioning of competition barbecue, undertaken most prominently by the Kansas City Barbeque Society (KCBS) , is a recent development in the history of such gatherings, which— as noted in the diary of George Washington —date back to the birth of our barbecue nation and beyond. The competitive circuit was established not only so pimasters could gather on a smoking battlefield, but …

Vegan Drinks XXVIII is Thursday, August 26th!

04c6f54dd4s Logo.jpg 150x72 Vegan Drinks XXVIII is Thursday, August 26th!

[Drinks for vegans!] Don’t miss the last Vegan Drinks of the super humid months! Show up at 7pm on Thursday, August 26th, order a drink (or two or three) and meet some new friends! As always Vegan Drinks NYC takes place at Angels & Kings Bar in the East Village. The drink specials are CHEAP: $2 off everything until 8pm and then it’s $1 off draft beers and well drinks from 8pm to 9pm. Folks who don’t drink alcohol are also quite welcome, but you do have to be 21 to get in. We’ll turn down the music around 8:15pm and encourage people to promote themselves, their groups and/or causes for 30 seconds. If you represent a veg*n or animal rights group, come prepared with your (very short!) spiel and literature. Do you fancy yourself a decent photographer? Or, do you, at least, own a very nice camera capable of taking very good photos? If so, bring it with you on Thursday. Shoot a bunch of pictures. Upload them to our Flickr group: http://www.flickr.com/groups/vegandrinks . Check out our map of restaurants near Angels & Kings where you can grab a bite after the event. And if you haven’t already, link up with Vegan Drinks on Facebook and MySpace . Vegan Drinks is held from 7…

5 Ways to Combine Chocolate and Coffee

51856b8e5aeheart.jpg 150x99 5 Ways to Combine Chocolate and Coffee

This post is brought to you by Ghirardelli Intense Dark Chocolate. Awww, they loves each other. [ Flickr: foxtongue ] Chocolate and coffee: a classic combo. But when a choc-o-bomb doughnut and a watery cuppa joe aren’t doing it for you any more, you know you have other options, right? No I’m not talking about mochas . As delightful as they can be sometimes, I find those made in the local, um, Chain Coffee Place tend to be syrupy-sweet and completely lacking in the interplay of smokey, bitter and rich that marries chocolate and coffee so well. I’m also not going to talk about flavored coffee. Or flavored coffee “creamer.”* * Because I write the column, that’s why. 1. Pour Chocolate Syrup in Coffee Everything’s better with chocolate chips. [ Photograph: Robyn Lee ] First of all, if I’m going to mix chocolate and coffee as a drink, I’m going to do it right. Of course you can always pour some chocolate syrup into your morning java, but there’s also the option to add a little dutched cocoa powder and sugar (or honey, or maple or agave syrup or whatever) to your taste instead. Fancy! 2. Cocoa Nib Tea And something I’ve always wanted to do—but haven’t…

Meet & Eat: The Next Food Network Star, Season Six Winner

85c23d0392rimary.jpg 150x112 Meet & Eat: The Next Food Network Star, Season Six Winner

Last night we watched the season finale of The Next Food Network Star. If you haven’t yet, don’t click! Spoiler alert. We also got the winner on the phone to chat about what’s in store for him/her after his/her big victory. And the winner is.. Aarti! If you’ve been keeping up with our season six coverage of The Next Food Network Star , then you’ve seen some of winner Aarti Sequeira’s delicious Indian dishes on your screen. Get ready for even more ethnic education as Aarti takes her concept to a weekly series, Aarti Party , beginning this weekend. I chatted with Aarti about her friends from the show, her vision of Indian food in American kitchens, and how much she adores ice cream. Which was the most difficult challenge for you during the competition? The Beso challenge ( “Cooking for Eva Longoria Parker” ) was the most difficult for me, perhaps because I was in this emotional whirlpool after seeing my husband. Also I was affected by getting the word “fear,” which I’ve struggled with my whole life. And being intimidated by Eva Longoria and Todd English. And I let all that get the best of me. But now I know …

My Pizza Oven: Jay Jerrier and His Mobile Pizza Oven

5d377cc0c4y lede.jpg 150x99 My Pizza Oven: Jay Jerrier and His Mobile Pizza Oven

From Slice You might recognize Jay Jerrier primarily by his screen name on Slice — canerosso . He’s the first My Pizza Oven profile I’ve done with someone who owns a mobile pizza oven. From the looks of his pizzas, it looks like the oven on wheels is no impediment to high-quality pies. Without further ado, let’s get Jay in the hot seat! — The Mgmt. [Photographs: Jay Jerrier] Name: Jay Jerrier Location: Dallas URL(s): ilcanerosso.com ; Il Cane Rosso on Facebook ; @canerosso on Twitter You have a wood-fired mobile pizza oven. That’s crazy awesome. When did you get it? Where’s it from? I love my mobile oven. It was built by Joseph Pergolizzi of The Fire Within in Boulder, Colorado. The trailer is custom built to carry the oven—a modular unit from Forno Bravo . Both are very well built. For an oven with a large mouth and reasonably high dome, as opposed to true Neapolitan ovens, it really holds the heat well. Joseph really stands behind his product; he’s even come out to work some events with me to see how we do it and offer some pointers. The mobile oven is actually my second oven—I built …

Fourth of July Company

8de9650204spx 2.jpeg 150x124 Fourth of July Company

I had a fabulous Fourth of July celebration and cookout with great family and friends. Here they are… This is Chooey’s new friend, Shark – he is an 8-week-old, male Blue Merle Shetland Sheepdog . As you can see, Chooey & Shark are great pals. Chooey is not the only one with a great pal – here I am with mine. My great-uncle Al & great-aunt Marilyn were there too, sharing a homemade Root Beer Float. Here is my grandfather with a family-friend of ours ( she is Shark’s owner! )… …and Shark with his other owner ( the husband of the family-friend in the previous photo ). Here are my mom, two nephews, and the daughter of our family-friends , discussing something. I was not there for the conversation. Also in attendance, but not photographed: VeggieDad ( of course! ), more family-friends, my brother, and my sister-in-law. **With whom did you spend your Fourth of July, regardless of whether or not you are living in the United States?**

Meet & Eat: Joan Fang, Serious Eats Intern

840f74df18anfang.jpg 128x150 Meet & Eat: Joan Fang, Serious Eats Intern

Note: It’s time to meet another member of the Serious Eats summer intern squad. Joan joined us in May and has been responsible for all the quizzes you’ve been taking lately. She may have stumped you on tropical fruits , french fries , and ramen . Now she’s headed off to Hong Kong for the rest of the summer, then back to Harvard in the fall, but will still be chiming in with those weekly quizzes, so don’t put away that digital #2 pencil. Say hello to quizmaster Joan! —The Mgmt. Name: Joan Fang Location: NYC; Cambridge, Massachusetts Occupation : SE intern; student Guilty pleasures? One of my favorite foods is the fatty skin on top of red braised pork shoulders, luscious and rich. That along with the crispy skin off Peking duck, pork cracklings, and the crunchy skin on grilled fish are pretty serious indulgences. Describe your perfect meal. Hotpot. I’d start it off with a few slices of sashimi of every sort—Spanish mackerel is my absolute favorite type of sashimi. Then a pot of boiling stock and herbs with some lamb, taro root, tofu and rice cakes. It’s the absolute perfect meal, especially because the multiple hours it takes on end to…
