It’s a shame because whether you call it belacan, terasi, or bagoong, shrimp paste is an umami flavor bomb that can transform sambals and stir-fries into something otherworldly. Bagoong alamang is a shrimp paste native to the Philippines and especially prized by Ilocanos , who harvest the tiny krill shrimp for bagoong from the coastal waters around the country’s Ilocos region. In its raw state, bagoong is salty with undertones of sweetness and a strong smell that a novice may liken to a gym sock. Emmy Memories

I didn’t bake this weekend. I was in Los Angeles for something super fun. It was a whirlwind weekend that centered around the Emmys. The actual Emmys. Yes, the ones that were on TV Sunday night. I know. You must be wondering what in the heck was I doing out there –  because I’m still trying to wrap my head around it all, too. You see Duncan Hines just so happened to be the official dessert sponsor for the Emmy Performer Nominee Reception that Friday before the big event. They set up a glam cupcake lounge for all the nominees and guests and flew a few bloggers to L.A. to cover the festivities for the weekend. And I was lucky enough to be one of them. It was a red carpet entrance for the stars. Once inside the party, they had their choice of several fantastic cupcakes, including the Duncan Hines Red Carpet Challenge Winner’s Cupcake as the star attraction. Cupcake vendor without food permit banned from selling cupcakes

The beginning of this story from Wicked Local reads like something from satirical newspaper The Onion . “Those are mine!” So claimed a young man around 10 p.m. last Friday, snatching up the last two pink frosted cupcakes left on Scott Cunningham’s tray. He was the last lucky cupcake lover that evening to buy one of the butter cream delicacies that Cunningham’s “ScottCakes” has turned into a sugar-infused phenomena on Commercial Street. The happy buyer was also the last one to break the law, helping fan a political firestorm that has resulted in Cunningham being forced to stop selling the round cakes on the street even though he had been issued a food service permit by the local licensing agent for the past two years. “Family Week was crazy.
