From Boston Business Journal , some good news about the economy and cupcakes: Courtney Forrester’s decision to open her third Sweet cupcake shop on Newbury Street earlier this month means that shoppers can now indulge in freshly baked dark chocolate, red velvet and Boston cream pie cupcakes. The news is also sweet for the job market. Forrester hired seven new employees — from managers to cake decorators ­­— for the store. “Opening a new location gives us a great opportunity to employ some local folks,” said Forrester, who also has stores in Harvard Square and on Massachusetts Avenue. I stopped by the Hester Street Fair today to visit Kumquat Cupcakery , one of our favorites, who is also selling this weekend at the Brooklyn Flea. Her mini cupcakes are $1 each and she had 5 flavors on offer. The orange strawberry poppyseed cupcakes, which were delicious and not too overpowering (I’m not a huge orange fan), a dark chocolate mini cupcake that was wonderful, as well as chocolate peanut butter, lemon lavender and red velvet. A few years ago my Dad mailed be a copy of Steve Almond’s book, Candyfreak , a quick, fun read that takes a closer look at regional and specialty candy bars of the United States. My interest was piqued, and in probably one of the most indulgent months of my life, I ate my way through eighteen US regional candy bars and lived to tell the tale . It’s been a while since I’ve wanted to eat multiple candy bars, but here I am taste-testing ZZang candy bars from Zingerman’s , the Ann Arbor, Michigan, gourmet and specialty foods purveyor, which most of us living elsewhere know from their catalogs and online site . The tag line on ZZang candy bars reads, “taking candy bars back 100 years,” and is a nod to the old-timey regional candy bars that used to be so prolific. And, to make you feel at least a little bit better about eating candy bars, the ingredient list on the ZZang bars are populated only with items you’d find in your kitchen. Plus what fun flavors they are debuting… The shop will introduce four new gourmet cupcake flavors: candy corn, death by chocolate, salted caramel and monkey bread. Two hundred customers will receive free their choice of one of the four new flavors on a first-come, first-served basis.
