Sandwiched between I-287 to the west and its namesake Jersey City Reservoir to the east, there’s not much else around but a quiet residential neighborhood and a small industrial park. But people do find it, as evidenced by the crowd there on a Saturday afternoon at 5:30 p.m. The parking lot was absolutely packed — and packed with a diversity of vehicles (work-battered pickup trucks, new BMWs, old Hondas, Chevys, Fords, Mini Coopers) that suggests this pizzeria draws people from all walks of life. I always take that as a sign of a good pizzeria. I added my rented Zipcar to the mix and lined up for a table. Look here, I’m not an unreasonable guy, I’d like to save the world, the rainforests, the polar ice cap, whales and Wales but sometimes the bunny huggers make me want to do a Luke Watson and throw up – they’re just so bloody PC it makes me cringe. It seems everyone is into providing consumers with detailed information on the sources and background of their products and that’s no bad thing but trust the bloody Yanks to make it so flesh creeping goody goody. There’s a crowd out in San Francisco (where else?), home of the flower children and good old down to earth wierdos, called Original Beans, who produce single origin chocolate bars de luxe which are specially refined with respect to the region they are harvested from: the Republic of Congo, Ecuador and Bolivia. For each bar sold, Original Beans plants a tree in the rainforest where the bar’s ingredients originated. A bit twee but I can live with it I suppose however the whammy is that each bar carries a certificate inside the wrapper with a lot number that designates the location of a new tree. Vegan Drinks XIX: The Recap

The November 19th installment of Vegan Drinks featured a solid lineup. Fresh faces mixed with the very familiar ones. DJ Lil Ray kept the crowd in steady beats. Angels & Kings bartender Jesse replenished drinks effortlessly. And, David from Farm Sanctuary helped us all to adopt turkeys, pigs and cows just in time for the start of the winter holiday season. We owe a special thanks to our friends who donated Farm Sanctuary memberships and adoptions for us to give away to three lucky folks in the crowd. The people lined up to spread their messages during “Shout Outs.” David announced a plethora of upcoming Farm Sanctuary events. Joyce introduced us to Pets for Life NYC . Kneel revealed that Vegetable Slut has a new Web site and vegan-friendly designs for sale. Abby made an appeal for one of the dogs on Friday’s euthanasia list at Animal Care & Control and offered her assistance to anyone who could foster the dog.
