Ask the Internet: Pink Foods and Recipes?

cd579dd75frcake 120x150 Ask the Internet: Pink Foods and Recipes?

Today’s hue-larious (sorry) question comes from reader Eleonora: Q: I have a girls’ night in coming up and I would like to have some PINK food on the table! So far I have apple and beetroot juice (purchased, perhaps not that cheap at £3 per bottle) and beetroot risotto. Maybe something based on prawns? Rhubarb? Ideas welcome! A: Wow. This one’s a toughy. Red foods are fairly easy to come by, but pink ones are a little harder. Strawberry Mousse would definitely work as a dessert, and this Summer Borscht could make a good starter course. Red cabbage has more of a purple tint, but mixed with apples it might lighten up. I wonder if you could make Ina Garten’s Orange Yogurt with a little pomegranate juice? (If all else fails, a pack of McCormick’s neon food coloring can work wonders. Pink eggs, anyone?) Readers, how about you? Do you know of any pink foods for Eleonora? The comment section is ready and waiting. Want to ask the interweb a question? Post one in the comment section, or write to Cheaphealthygood@gmail.com. Then, tune

Chocolate While Trying To Conceive or Pregnant

340628cfe635 150x101 Chocolate While Trying To Conceive or Pregnant

I’ve received a number of emails and blog comments from women asking about the consumption of chocolate while trying to conceive and/or while pregnant. It’s a great question. I know that during previous blog posts I was avoiding chocolate when trying to conceive, and at the time I imagined that I’d also be avoiding it during pregnancy. That said, it’s important to constantly reassess values, ideas, and plans on an ongoing basis to see if things change when new information becomes available (or when hormones take over, LOL… just kidding. Mostly.). But in all seriousness, as you’ll read below, yes, it’s true: I have enjoyed some Raw chocolate while pregnant. So. What changed? Read on… As many of you know, I’m not a midwife or doctor, so the information I’m sharing is about what I am doing and is in no way prescriptive for you. Chocolate While Trying to Conceive When I was TTC (trying to conceive) I eliminated virtually all caffeine including chocolate, coffee, and tea. I might have had one or two bites of Raw chocolate over a span of a couple of months at a time, but you get the picture. Chocolate has a limited amount of caffeine and so I was avoiding it. It…

FINALLY! NO-KNEAD, CRUSTY ALMOST-ALL WHOLE WHEAT ARTISAN BREAD BAKED IN A POT!

272f1f7065e1d44ff68c43055654a491 FINALLY! NO KNEAD, CRUSTY ALMOST ALL WHOLE WHEAT ARTISAN BREAD BAKED IN A POT!

Over the last few months, in between other projects, I have been trying to make a whole wheat, crusty, no-knead artisan loaf that I can be really proud of (like my “whiter version” , which is only about 1/3rd whole wheat.) I’m not saying that this is the final version, but I think it’s pretty darn close! (Read more about the no-knead bread process and why it’s so good here and here .) As with my other recipe, I borrowed ideas and advice from a number of experts (see the text at the beginning of the recipe below), combined with my own tastes and experience. I don’t know if it is possible to make a really tempting whole wheat version of this type of bread solely with whole wheat flour. My early attempts were “grassy”-tasting and heavy. So, I used the proportions in Jeff Hertzberg’s and Zoë François’ recipe for “five-minute” no-knead, refrigerated for whole grain bread, with a few additions and changes. The proportions are slightly more than 3/4 whole wheat flour to slightly less than 1/4 unbleached white flour– not bad! The authors explained that “ In order to mix up dough that’s really …

Veggie Might: Make Your Own Paneer (Fresh Indian Cheese)

Paneer+Step+1 Veggie Might: Make Your Own Paneer (Fresh Indian Cheese)

Written by the fabulous Leigh, Veggie Might is a weekly Thursday column about all things Vegetarian. Back in November, my company held its annual Multi-Cultural Feast. It’s a fun, food-centric celebration to which everyone brings a dish from their homeland—be it Indiana or India. One of my favorite dishes this year was Anand’s palek paneer (spinach with fresh cheese). It was spicier and tastier than any I’ve ever had in an Indian restaurant. I asked Anand if he would share the recipe, expecting to get one passed down from his grandmother or an auntie or something. “Sure,” he said, a little sheepishly. “I got it from the Internet. I’ll send you the link. I put in too many chilies, though; you’ll want to use less.” I had to laugh. That’s how so many of my “family recipes” return to my rotation. I’ll call my mother to get the recipe for grandma’s pound cake or Aunt Jane’s pimento cheese and I’ll realize she’s reading to me from All Recipes. Whether a generations-old family favorite, or right off the Web, Anand’s palek paneer was awesome and I had to try it. I followed the link (to the charming and …

How to Lose Weight and Keep it Off: 10 Rules to Live By

25c83ea511f206e88f214719dad9c88c How to Lose Weight and Keep it Off: 10 Rules to Live By

I’ve been browsing a lot of wedding message boards lately. It’s a fun pastime. You take polls. You read arguments that could only happen in America. You learn what preoccupies engaged folks. Which? Besides the usual etiquette questions and endless recaps of Bridezilla , is losing weight. To a certain degree, this is to be expected. It’s certainly a concern of mine. (Those photos will last for-freaking-ever.) But there are a disturbing number of fad diets floating around those boards: cheap pills, single-food fasts, and bizarre old wives’ tales. Needless to day, they’re expensive and frequently harmful, and the results are usually only temporary. Of course, when it comes to successfully losing weight (and more importantly, keeping it off), nothing is written in stone. What works for one person may not work for her twin sister. I certainly don’t know all the answers. But I kinda know some of them. These ten rules have been echoed time and again by medical professionals, nutrition experts, and the media in general. They’re fairly essential to any weight control. Many have worked for me over the years. Hopefully, they’ll help you along, too. If you have more rules to add, I’d love to read ‘em. …

HypnoBirthing Session One – Recap

9ee646ffab71107d1a11407be52f33a5 HypnoBirthing Session One – Recap

I know my blog is primarily Raw food centered, but the raw lifestyle can reach into so many other areas of life that are natural, beautiful, eco friendly, etc. It all fits, if you ask me. I also have many women writing to me that they are glad I’m sharing my personal journey with fertility and pregnancy, the things I’m experiencing, the things I’m learning. So, with that introduction… On Sunday, we attended our first HypnoBirthing session in preparation for our future homebirth. HypnoBirthing is a special alternative to the traditional Lamaze and Bradley classes that many folks take. HypnoBirthing might sound a little “out there” to some, but it’s been pretty amazing so far. The basic premise of HypnoBirthing, according to HypnoBirthing.com , is that it’s a unique method of relaxed, natural childbirth education enhanced by self-hypnosis techniques. Sounds good to me. Even though we’ve only had one session, my take is that it’s basically getting into a meditative, relaxed state during child birth, which can help the mom to better cope with it. I saw a few videos on YouTube and most women usually look like they’…

Meet My Rockin’ Midwife & Why I’m Choosing a Home Birth

39deac918e401 132x150 Meet My Rockin’ Midwife & Why I’m Choosing a Home Birth

Today, I’m introducing you to the midwife who will be in attendance at my home birth. Her name is Shell Walker ( here’s her website , which is under construction right now, but still has some information on it), and let me just start by saying that she is so great. She’s sweet, smart, capable, experienced, responsive, cool, and a perfect fit for my needs. Midwives have been attending home births for a long, long time. In fact, a majority of births in many parts of the world use midwives and home births for the norm as opposed to hospital births, unlike our country which relies on hospitals. I recognize that hospitals can have their place in some births and they can very much be needed at times, but for the most part… a healthy woman can birth successfully in the comfort of her home, and in some cases have better outcomes than if she went to the hospital. Here is an article detailing a Canadian study discussing the safety of home births with midwives. I find that when I tell people I’m planning to birth at home, I get looks of either shock or disbelief. Then, I find myself…

Veggie Might: Make Your Own Almond Milk

b42ecbc6ffdmilk 112x150 Veggie Might: Make Your Own Almond Milk

Written by the fabulous Leigh, Veggie Might is a weekly Thursday column about all things Vegetarian. Complete the following word problem and show your work: You purchased a 4-lb bag of almonds for $10.99 at the Indian market near your friend T’s house. Three weeks later, you still have 1/2 of the bag left. You are worried you may not eat all the remaining almonds before they go rancid because you forgot to stick the bag in the fridge sooner. What can you do with 1 cup of the remaining almonds? Sample response: Make almond milk. 1) Cover 1 cup of almonds with water and soak overnight. 2) Drain, rinse, and place almonds in a blender with 3 fresh cups of water. Puree until the almonds are chopped finely. 3) Using cheesecloth or a fine strainer, strain the liquid from the almond mash. Press the mash to extract as much liquid as possible. 4) Set aside the mash for later. 5) Strain a second time. If you used cheese cloth, switch to a fine strainer. 6) Save the superfine mash—this is almond paste! 7) Refrigerate the liquid for 24 hours. There will be some separations, so give the almond milk a good shake. Add a…

Feed the World: Holiday Food Donations and Volunteering

19f808451dgroup 150x97 Feed the World: Holiday Food Donations and Volunteering

This is a repost from December 2007. But, y’know. It still applies. Also, just a reminder: starting tomorrow at 9:30am, CHG is liveblogging a full day of the Food Network. Tune in! Turn on! (Don’t drop out.) Once upon a time (1984), in a land far, far away (England), there lived a thin, dyspeptic pop star named Bob Geldof . Now, Bob was a good pop star, but at the time, fairly unknown in world-saving circles. Then, one day, he happened to stumble across a BBC report on the famine in Ethopia, where hundreds of thousands of poverty-stricken Africans were dying for lack of food and medicine. Shaken by the conditions of these poor, oppressed people, Bob decided to do something about it. Using all his thin, dyspeptic pop star powers, young Geldof assembled a mighty group of famous U.K. musicians (Bono, Sting, Paul McCartney), not-quite-as-famous U.K. musicians (Jody Watley, the guy from Spandau Ballet), soon-to-be-infamous U.K. musicians (George Michael, Boy George), and dubbed them Band Aid. Together, they recorded “ Do They Know it’s Christmas,” the most powerful charity Christmas song since “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” (which, as…
