From Serious Eats: New York Annual Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest. [Photograph: Robyn Lee] Competitive eating is a polarizing topic among those who take food seriously. Did you watch the hot dog eating contest this weekend?

Cook the Book: ‘Recipes from an Italian Summer’

447a1d3100summer.jpg 100x150 Cook the Book: Recipes from an Italian Summer

Summer in Italy is truly a thing of beauty. Markets overflow gorgeous seasonal produce and the Italians really know how to take advantage of it. Recipes from an Italian Summer is made up of warm-weather recipes culled from The Silver Spoon , perhaps the most comprehensive volume on regional Italian cooking available. The recipes have been selected based on their summer friendliness, nothing that involves sweating over a hot stove, just simply prepared dishes that make the most of a bounty of beautiful summer produce. The dishes collected in Recipes from an Italian Summer are taken from popular Italian vacation regions including the beaches of Sicily and Sardinia and the picturesque countrysides of Tuscany and Campania. The book is illustrated with not only mouthwatering photos of the dishes but also photos of the regions where they originate that are enough to make you seriously think about an Italian summer vacation. Everyday this week we’ll be sharing ideas for light summer meals from Recipes from an Italian Summer such as a Farro and Shrimp Salad , Sea Trout stuffed with Almonds and Yogurt , and an intriguing Strawberry Risotto . Win ‘Recipes from an Italian Summer’ Thanks to the generous folks over …

Cook the Book: ‘The Book of Tapas’

1a47df77dbftapas.jpg 100x150 Cook the Book: The Book of Tapas

While the etymology of the term tapas isn’t certain, these small plates that accompany drinks before dinner are one of the most delicious parts of Spanish culinaria. More than bar snacks but not quite a full meal, tapas are a way to bridge the sizable gap between the end of the work day and the typically late dinner hour that’s customary in Spain. The time before dinner is spent grazing from bar to bar having a glass of wine, sherry, or vermouth and a small selection of tapas ranging from preserved fish and pickled vegetables to warm tapas such as albóndigas and croquetas . This week we are bringing you a week of tapas recipes from the newly released The Book of Tapas by Simone and Inés Ortega , the mother and daughter team behind 1080 Recipes , one of the most comprehensive books on Spanish cooking available. This week we will be sharing small plates from The Book of Tapas that can be served on their own as appetizers or together to make for a wonderful spread of tapas at home. Make sure to …

Cook the Book: ‘Seasonal Fruit Desserts’

35bee73621sserts.jpg 120x150 Cook the Book: Seasonal Fruit Desserts

I’d been saving Deborah Madison ’s Seasonal Fruit Desserts for a time when seasonal fruit meant more than just apples and pears. And now that I’ve seen the first waves of rhubarb and strawberries (at least here on the East Coast) it really does feel like spring is here. It’s just a matter of time before we’re awash in peaches, plums, cherries, and all manner of berries. Madison is a champion of seasonal eating and the recipes in Seasonal Fruit Desserts prove that. Instead of being concerned with baking precious, pretty desserts, Madison relies on fruit at the height of its season to make these recipes work. Every Monday for the next four weeks we’ll be sharing a dessert from Seasonal Fruit Desserts using seasonal fruit that’s minimally altered and doesn’t require any sort of pastry chef-worthy skills. Win ‘Seasonal Fruit Desserts’ Thanks to the generous folks over at Broadway Books , we are giving away five (5) copies of Seasonal Fruit Desserts this month. All you have to do is tell us about your favorite seasonal fruit dessert in the comments section below. Five (5) people will be chosen at random among the eligible comments below. We’re sorry, but entry is only open to residents of the U.S. and Canada…

Wreckies of the Month

075684823cory%29.jpg 112x150 Wreckies of the Month

It’s time again to recognize those devoted evil Wrecky henchpersons who’ve sufficiently amused and/or impressed me this month. First we have the “Most Awesomely Geeky Baby Shower Cake” (EVER!!): You long-time henchpersons will recognize this as an homage to that amazing Darth Vader shower cake which I claimed could only be topped by a cake featuring Spock instead. Carol J. was less than impressed with the bakery’s end result, but I think the wreckiness just adds to its hilarity, don’t you? Next we have Luke, age 6, who made a “T Rex, NOT a cake Rex!” for a school contest: Adorable. Love the matching shirt, too, Luke. (Oh, and he won the contest, btw, but that should go without saying.) Hey, you know how you’re always trying to think of more ways to include Cake Wrecks in your lives? Well here’s an idea: use your copy of Cake Wrecks as the guest book at your wedding! This is GENIUS, Lindsay F. I mean, first of all, now you can NEVER get rid of your copy of Cake Wrecks, but secondly, now this book contains the two things you hold most dear: CW, and, you know, all those people who showed up to your wedding. But …
