Cupcake teepees!

700db3524e10 o d.jpg 150x99 Cupcake teepees!

Lilsugar user Colbie made these cupcake teepees for her nephew, who’s big into cupcakes, using ice cream cones, cake batter, chocolate, sprinkles and pretzels. (via Lilsugar ) One thing I never could’ve imagined way back in December 2004 when we started this blog is just how creative people can get with cupcakes, especially for kids. You like it? It can become a cupcake, and while sometimes that means placing a logo or drawing or writing something on top of a cupcake or adding a topper, sometimes it means deconstructing the very idea of what a cupcake is and turning it on its head (sometimes literally). And I bet they were delicious! Click above to find out how she made them.

0baa267bd8aspx1.jpeg1 150x112 VG & Suave Slav Hit The Big Apple: Part 2

Did you miss Part 1 of this new, exciting series? Then please click here … and then come back to read Part 2! :) **Monday, August 23rd** After surviving an evening of gory movie-watching ( Centurion , anyone? ) and feeling quite ill ( delayed reaction to the plane turbulance, food-related, who knows ), Suave Slav and I bounced back just in time to start a new day in the city. First up on the agenda ? Brave the pouring rain with my dear friend, Maggie , over to One Lucky Duck for some beverages and an overdue chat session. The next two photos exhibit the significant height difference… as well as the One Lucky Duck product display ! :) After saying goodbye to Maggie and parting ways, it was time for Suave Slav and I to navigate the city and shop a bit . Unfortunately the only photo I have from shopping trip #1 ( yes, there were more! stay tuned ) is this one: No, I did not end up purchasing the heels . Very cool, but I am not interested in shoes that could double as mass-murder …

Two Little Red Hens

On my way home from work today I stopped in Two Little Red Hens, a bakery on the Upper East Side in NYC that I frequently walk by on my rush to and from the subway. A newbie to the UES, I have yet to scope out all the cupcake spots and decided my first place was going to be this cute shop that totally caught my eye. The shop itself is very inviting with its welcoming décor and seating area where you can relax and enjoy your treats. The display case is filled with lots of goodies to choose from and I was having a hard time deciding which cupcakes to try. A friendly worker behind the counter suggested I try their popular cupcake, Brooklyn Blackout. As she was wrapping that up I caved in and asked her for two mini Red Velvet cupcakes, a personal favorite, to try as well. The Brooklyn Blackout cupcake is chocolate cake with chocolate frosting and filled to perfection with a chocolate pudding surprise in the middle. The cake was very moist and rich with flavor. Eating it, I wondered how in the world they managed to keep the cupcake consistency. I’ve often tried cupcakes that are so loaded with chocolate they taste like brownies, but the Brooklyn Blackout are cupcakes indeed…

Interview: Michael Laiskonis, Executive Pastry Chef at Le Bernardin

11b1702756olate1.jpg 120x150 Interview: Michael Laiskonis, Executive Pastry Chef at Le Bernardin

This post is brought to you by Ghirardelli Intense Dark Chocolate. Michael Laiskonis is consistently rated as one of the top pastry chefs in the country for his work at the three-Michelin-star-rated Le Bernardin . He also happens to be an incredibly nice guy, and generously took some time out of his insane schedule to answer some of my questions. His other musings on food and life can be found on his blog . You eschewed formal training in favor of learning on the job; what was the thought process there? I’m not sure there was much of a thought process, it’s just the way it all ended up playing out! When I first started cooking, or rather, once I realized that it was a career that I wanted to pursue, I wasn’t in a position to drop everything in order to enroll in a program like that at the CIA. Thus, my culinary path became a sort of “earn while you learn” apprenticeship, under a handful of chefs that I still consider early mentors. Indeed, for a long time, I felt as if I was missing out on something, not having pursued formal training, but I eventually got over it! In a way, I …
