I recently spent some time chatting with Rip Esselstyn , the Ironman triathlete and former firefighter behind The Engine 2 Diet . Rip filled me in on his partnership with Whole Foods, the real solution to the health care crisis and why Costa Rica is the country to be. ( Click here to check out my interview with Gene Stone, Rip’s cowriter on the book.) Roseann Marulli: Hi, Rip. I know you have a lot going on right now, so thanks for taking the time to speak with us. The book came out about a year ago, right? Rip: Let’s see—no, officially it came out February 25, 2009. Roseann: Okay, so it’s almost a year and a half now, and you’re still touring and talking to people. What’s the reception been like? Are people resistant because you’re asking them to take the things out of their diet that they think make life worth living: meat, cheese, the whole nine? Rip: If we’re talking America in general, yeah, they’re very resistant—most people are resistant to change, especially when it comes to food, and especially foods that they’re very comfortable with. But what I’ve been doing—as of late October, I …

When the Good Humor Man Is a Woman

[Photograph: Brad Thomas Parsons] This weekend a dear friend of mine from Seattle was in town and she invited me to join her at a wedding held on the grounds of the Queens County Farm Museum , located less than 20 miles from Manhattan in Glen Oaks, New York (it’s technically in Queens but your taxi driver will likely insist you’re on Long Island). It’s pretty amazing to turn off the bustling Little Neck Parkway and suddenly be set upon 47 acres of historical farmland in New York City. Among the wedding guests was a starting lineup of barnyard animals—both fenced in and sometimes wandering the grounds—including Rhode Island red hens, ducks, a turkey or two, goats, sheep, many day-tripping NYC pigeons, and a prideful peacock. And where there are barns there are usually barn cats, and I spent some time before the ceremony seeking them out without much luck. There were also heritage pigs on the property but they laid low, probably calling it a night as soon as the caterers fired up the barbecue pit. The reception menu was a perfect fit for the setting and included pulled pork, brisket, pit beans, and cornbread washed down with iced tubs of Brooklyn Lager. As the night was winding down and the…

Chooey’s 1-Year Reunion

c2e97e0451spx 8.jpeg 148x150 Chooeys 1 Year Reunion

Sorry, but I need to make yet another “broken record statement” = time flies!! Why am I making that statement this time? Well… Can you believe that it has already been one year since my family adopted Chooey from the shelter ? This past Saturday ( July 10th ), my parents and I made the long drive out to the Angels For Animals Shelter , which is where we found Chooey. Every year, the shelter holds a “Doggy Daze” Reunion in order for people to provide updates on their adopted animals and to help support the efforts to find new homes for the animals still in the shelter. But do not let the “Doggy Daze” title fool you. Dogs were not the only type of animal available for adoption at this event ( or at the shelter in general ) – you will see, in the following photos, just how many types of animals were there. And now, the highlights from Chooey’s 1-year reunion at the shelter: There were goats up for adoption ( along with some chickens , but I failed to photograph them )… Horses ( channeling their inner Fabio )… Llamas … Yes, I said llamas . My parents and I actually wanted some but then realized that our city probably would not approve of having a supply of farm animals in …

The Nasty Bits: Duck Liver

bafca140c5livers.jpg 150x100 The Nasty Bits: Duck Liver

From Recipes [ Photographs: Chichi Wang ] More Bits Tacos de Buche (Pork Stomach) » All Nasty Bits recipes » Greenmarket farmers’ markets in New York City are my favorite new place to hunt for offal. You may not think of your farmers’ market as a source for nose-to-tail cuts, yet these days the meat vendors are showing up in full force. Best of all, you never know what you might find in one of their coolers. Over the past year, I’ve come across cuts of offal at farmers’ markets that I haven’t even found at sustainable or ethnic butcher shops. Why I was surprised to see cartons of livers and hearts in the coolers at the farmers’ markets, I don’t know. By the time animals arrive at a butcher shop, they’ll have passed through plants where some percentage of the offal is discarded in an effort to expedite the process and keep the facilities clean. The farmers who slaughter as well as butcher, on the other hand, often take the time to save the offal from their animals. Though not all farmers possess the facilities and legal certification, some do have their own abattoirs on site. Even those who do not own their own abattoirs will send their…

Woman Almost Dies From Eating Too Much Raw Bok Choi

5aa39e0d88756c m.jpg 150x112 Woman Almost Dies From Eating Too Much Raw Bok Choi

[Bok Choi butts. Photo by flickr user The Marmot. ] An 88-year-old woman almost died last year from a myxedema coma–a life-threatening condition caused by extreme hypothyroidism. I’ll let the New York Times take it from there: The culprit, it turned out, was raw bok choy. The patient had been eating two to three pounds of it every day for several months, in the belief it would help control her diabetes. Instead, the vegetables may have suppressed her thyroid. Bok choy contains compounds called glucosinolates that have been found to inhibit thyroid function in animals. “I don’t want to say people shouldn’t be eating raw vegetables, but everything in moderation — even things that are good for us,” said Dr. Michael Chu, an NYU resident physician who was one of the letter’s authors. “This probably wouldn’t have happened if the vegetables were cooked.” So that pretty much proves conclusively that raw foodists are all gonna die soon, right?
