Magnolia Bakery now open in Los Angeles, still out of the social media loop

We’ll soon have a more in-depth report for you on the new Magnolia Bakery that opened Saturday in Los Angeles, but for now, here are a few of the early sightings. ethbay window writes: I ordered a pretty vanilla cupcake with yellow frosting and a pink flower on it. Larry ordered the key lime mini cheesecake. He gave me a bite and I almost passed out – it was SO rich and good. Diana Takes a Bite went to a preview, and didn’t try a cupcake, but reports on the other items she tried and took some great photos (below) and writes: Even though I’ve always been more partial to chocolate, ice cream, cookies and bar-type items when I’m craving something sweet, I could scarcely wait to sink my teeth into one of Magnolia’s prized cupcake possessions. I was going to be there on opening day. I was going to be the sugar-crazed girl pounding on the door, pushing children out of the way and throwing elbows into the faces of my vanilla cupcake competitors. And I was going…

From A Hamburger Today [Photographs: Damon Gambuto] Checkers Downtown 535 S. Grand Avenue, Los Angeles CA 90071 ( map ); 213-624-0000; checkersdowntown.com Cooking Method: Grilled Short Order: An upscale dining room makes a decadent burger Want Fries with That? Yes—they’re straightforward and satisfying Prices: Checker’s Cheeseburger (w/fries), $14 (Lunch and Bar Menu) Notes: The Thursday night’s happy hour is called FOUR because selected drinks and small plates are $4 a piece from 4 p.m – 8 p.m. I’d say it’s in the running for best Happy Hour in town. Each week’s deals are previewed on their Facebook page Sitting in one of Los Angeles’ most storied neighborhood’s, Bunker Hill, Checkers Hotel is an attractive piece of the art deco city’s history. The building dates back to the 1927 when it was opened as the Mayflower Hotel. It lacks the grandeur of its more famous neighbor, The Millennium Biltmore , but recently has managed to do something that not too many hotels in town have: garner some attention for its dining room. Most of the Los Angeles food scene talk about how Checkers Downtown has focused on their very clever and very tempting happy hour. They call it FOUR and, as you’d imagine…

From A Hamburger Today [Photographs: Damon Gambuto] Nook 11628 Santa Monica Blvd., Los Angeles CA 90025 ( map ); 310-207-5160; nookbistro.com Cooking Method: Grilled Short Order: A hip restaurant tucked away in the corner of a strip mall fails to bring any inspiration to their burger Want Fries with That? No thanks Prices: Nook Burger (w/french fries), $12 Notes: While there are a few comfort food options, you’d do better to stick with the California cuisine. There is a bit of a tradition here in Los Angeles that demands that people set aside a special type of cooing over a stylish restaurant that happens to be located in a strip mall. That a good restaurant happens to be located in a one of these (bastard) children of commercial architecture isn’t really what initiates the fascination. Many of the very best spots to eat here in Los Angeles are strip mall restaurants: Sushi Ike for Japanese, Din Tai Fung for soup dumplings, and on and on. It’s the simple fact of our city planning (or lack thereof) that businesses are forced onto these islands of commerce floating in our rivers of cars. But when the restaurant makes contemporary food in a stylish …

A Tasty Hollywood Original at Hamburger Hamlet in Los Angeles

From A Hamburger Today [Photographs: Damon Gambuto] Hamburger Hamlet 9201 W Sunset Blvd., West Hollywood, CA 90069 ( map ); 310-278-4924; hamburgerhamlet.com Cooking Method: Griddled Short Order: Still tasty after all these years. This Hollywood original has lost its authenticity, but the burgers haven’t Want Fries with That? Yes; the regular fries are flavorful and satisfying Prices: The All American Classic Cheeseburger, $10.95 Notes: If you are in LA, take a trip to the original on Sunset and head to a booth in the back for the authentic experience The idea that Los Angeles is a one-industry town can make visiting it a bit of a let down. Certainly the movie business defines the popular imagination of the city, but so much of the reality of Los Angeles lies in the basic, quotidian professions that make up all cities. You won’t see movie stars on every corner, and you won’t find much Hollywood history breathing without the life support of the tourist machinery. Though we’ve become much bigger than just a movie town, every now and then you’ll find yourself in a place with…

Midtown Lunch Los Angeles and Philadelphia Are Also Awesome

a6e04f8beenlunch.jpg 150x104 Midtown Lunch Los Angeles and Philadelphia Are Also Awesome

It was tough to see Midtown Lunch poobah and Serious Eats buddy Zach Brooks leave New York City in January, but he’s sure making us hungry over there on the West Coast with his pork belly banh mi and plantain-stuffed burrito reports. Since launching Midtown Lunch Los Angeles he’s been up to his usual fooding about town and weekly reader profiles in his Midtown Lunch’er series. “But there is no Midtown in Los Angeles, Zach!” is what you might be thinking. He knows. He’s seen a map. But his answer: “My fatness knows no boundaries!” Rather than focusing on a specific area of Los Angeles, he’s searching for “Midtown Lunch’ ish ” spots, wherever those may be. Also joining the Midtown Lunch family tree earlier this year was Midtown Lunch Philadelphia , with Jamie (she prefers not to give her last name) running the show. I mean, a person can only eat so many Wawa sandwiches, right? Jamie was profiled by Midtown Lunch NYC (Midtown Lunch the original?) before she moved to Philly, where she’s now a law school student (in between noodle soup adventures ). So attention all Philly and Los Angeles-area peeps: read these sites. They will make your sacred lunch

Ruminations on In-N-Out Burger

77020d7c1collage 150x100 Ruminations on In N Out Burger

From A Hamburger Today Note: Although people may call In-N-Out Burger overrated , it gets plenty of love: from regular consumers , famous chefs , famous actors , a book about its history, and imitators —if imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. In case you’re not already familiar with this Southern California-based burger chain, our New York City-based burger correspondent Nick Solares is here to share his thoughts on what makes it so good. [ Photographs: Nick Solares ] I travel to Los Angeles three or four times a year from New York City and spend about a week there on each visit. Back in my early days of reviewing for AHT, that meant a lot of hamburger consumption. But since we are fortunate to have the estimable Damon Gambuto on board as our Los Angeles correspondent, I now feel a sense of liberation as I don’t feel the need to seek out burgers to review the way I do when I travel elsewhere. Rather, I can return to the burgers that I have fallen in love with, such as the classic from Pie ‘N Burger in Pasadena …

From brioche ice cream sandwiches to duck tacos, the Los Angeles street food scene looks pretty darn tasty. A few friends decided to hop around the city with a camera and hit six popular trucks: Barbie’s Q (barbecue), Lomo Arigato (Peruvian fusion), Little Spoon Desserts (aw, their Twitter account is @ weliketospoon ), Flying Pig (Asian-French fusion), Coolhaus (fancy ice cream sandwiches), and Kogi (Korean-Mexi fusion, and the only vendor that declined an interview here). Redefining Beach Food with the Pretzel Burger at Hudson House in Redondo Beach, CA

2f0beabdfaintro 150x150 Redefining Beach Food with the Pretzel Burger at Hudson House in Redondo Beach, CA

From A Hamburger Today [Photographs: Damon Gambuto] Hudson House 514 N. Pacific Coast Highway, Redondo Beach CA 90277 ( map ); 310-798-9183‎; hudsonhousebar.com Cooking Method: Grilled Short Order: A high-quality specialty burger that puts the gastro in this pub. Want Fries with That? Yes, please. Very nicely rendered shoestrings. Prices: Hudson Pretzel Burger, $10; add $2 for fries Notes: If you are looking to sample the menu, Taco Tuesdays offer a super deal of $1 street-style tacos to accompany your burger. The Beach Cities are a collection of communities that dot the coastline just south of Los Angeles and represent that hard to find love-of-ease that can easily grow difficult. They have that Southern Californian temperament that thinks appointments are mere suggestions as to where one might find oneself. That is to say, folks down there make Angelenos seem punctual and serious. Of course, this is both a wild generalization and said with a deep and abiding affection. When I first moved to Los Angeles I found myself spending my weekends away from my hardened, Hollywood peers in favor of languid afternoons in the Beach Cities working on my surfing skills…
