Last night (as previously mentioned here on SuperVegan ) was the opening party for the Melissa's Shoes Pop-Up shop inside of the Lower East Side's Kaight store. Naked feet, open shoe boxes and smiling gals trying on super cute shoes were the scene last night. The vegan snacks amounted to little more than a few vegan thumbprint cookies in a bag, but there was vodka for the partakers and people seemed to be having a good time. (Seriously though, don't say you're providing vegan snacks and show up with a few cookies, because a hungry vegan might cut a b*tch) Full Disclosure: I have dude feet. So, that means I can't partake in the cute shoes above, but, I love to browse like I do and I'm all smiles at the thought of happy girls wearing cute shoes. So, there!
From Recipes [Photograph: Joshua Bousel] This is an incredibly sad month, my cherished Bacon of the Month Club (best. wedding. present. ever.) has ended. Six months and six pounds of bacon have left me with some very fond eating memories , and with just six slices of Ozark Trails Hickory Smoked Peppered Bacon left, I was determined to make these last strips really count. After whipping up a batch of South Carolina Mustard sauce, an earlier recipe in Big Bob Gibson's BBQ Book grabbed my attention: pork tenderloin rolled with bacon, coated with mustard sauce and pecans. With just four ingredients, surely the bacon was destined to be a star. Boy was it ever. The peppered bacon really flavored the entire pinwheel, which had a nice mustard tang and pleasing nutty crunch. Hopefully my doc isn't reading this, because with a sick wife, it was up to me to eat 12 of these delectable pinwheels that supposedly serve six, and that's exactly what I did. I can truly say that those last fatty, peppery pieces of cured pork belly went out in grand, grilled style. Pecan-Crusted Pork Pinwheels Adapted from Big Bob Gibson's BBQ Book by...

Pour the stock into a large pot. Bring to a boil. While that's warming up, pour the oil into another pot set over...

I could spend a few years trying to make my way though this exhaustive volume on Italian recipes, but I’ve spent the majority of my time lingering over the pasta section—and I’ve had great luck. What I love about the recipes is they’re at once comforting, complex, and really easy to make. That luckily applies to this barley soup, which doesn’t sound quite right, and yet comes together perfectly and effortlessly. Most barley soup recipes have a heavy helping of beef, which might have been really wonderful in mid-January. But now with spring around the corner, I was looking for something a tad lighter. Thankfully cabbage and spinach get the job done here. They bulk it out, making it a filling soup without being a heavy or meaty one. Barley Soup al Verde – serves 4 – Adapted from Silver Spoon Ingredients 6 1/4 cups chicken stock 3 tablespoons olive oil 1 onion, chopped 1 fresh sage leaf 1 cup Savory cabbage, halved and sliced thinly 3 cups spinach, chopped 3/4 cup pearl barley 1/3 cup Parmesan cheese, grated Salt Procedure 1. Pour the stock into a large pot. Bring to a boil. While that’s warming up, pour the oil into another pot set over…

In addition to cupcake murder mystery Sprinkle with Murder , another book in a completely different genre came out last week, Lisa Schroeder's middle grade novel It's Raining Cupcakes , geared toward kids ages 7-12. There's lots of fun cupcake moments here, and even a (perceived) rivalry between the protagonist Isabel's bakery, It's Raining Cupcakes, and a major brownie chain. Hopefully we'll have an interview here soon with Lisa Schroeder about her inspiration for the book. I'd recommend it to kids in that age range (and adults who love cupcakes). In addition to baking, it's about perseverance, being true to yourself, and family. Here's my review: It's Raining Cupcakes is a fun story about a young girl trying to stake her place in her family and in the world, as her mother gets ready to open a cupcake bakery and her best friends goes to camp, having adventures without her. Isabel dreams of traveling, but she's never left her small Ohio town. Instead, she reads about other cities and conjures the day she'll get a passport of her very own. She befriends neighbors and her aunt who share their travel tips, then decides to enter a baking contest...

Word meanings, synonyms, antonyms, word origins…it’s all about words. Here are the details: Smartypants Quiz – Saturday, March 13, 5:00 pm Pacific Time Also: if you have word-loving students under your roof, have them jump right on in and give it a try. I had my twelve-year-old give the last Word Nerd quiz a whirl…and let’s just say she didn’t ace it. But I only made her sit there for four hours—I’ve always thought it’s important not to push our children into learning! A natural pace is always best. This’ll be fun and low-key: a couple of Kindles will be among the prizes. Drop by if you’re in the mood! Originally posted here: Weekly Word Nerd Quiz – Saturday Night

Although simple, I have tried cooking this dish at home but never quite got it right. So a few nights ago I went to a seafood restaurant before peak hours and asked the cook if I could watch while he cooked my clams and he was too polite to shoo me away. I made sure not get in his way and stood across the island with his workers running around, probably wondering why I was allowed to stand there. What I've learnt about frying clams is that you first have to parboil them until they open just a little. This is to make sure that they all open and that you won't get a clamful of sand. It also makes it easier to remove the shell of the clam without meat, for presentation. Another must is a very hot wok, so hot the flames dance around the rim of the wok and cooks the clams in a few minutes without sweating the juices out. This is hard to do at home unless you have an outdoor kitchen, which I have, and a burner that can heat up so...

On March 26th at 9pm, Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution reality show premieres on ABC . Jamie travels to Huntington, West Virginia, aka the unhealthiest town in America as deemed by the US government, and embarks on a journey to save the health of the entire town, around 50,000 residents. Health problems plague this town: half of the town is obese, and the diabetes and heart disease rates are soaring. The school children couldn’t even name a tomato, they called it a potato . Thus not surprisingly, the show has ignited controversy … You say Potato, I say Tomato. In the trailer for the show, there is a clip of a classroom of elementary school students who don’t know that tomatoes are tomatoes . They call them potatoes . There is another clip of Jamie reacting in shock when greasy pizza is being served as ‘breakfast’ in a school cafeteria. Then there is another clip of a wilted-faced obese woman sobbing in frustration to Jamie over an enormous pile of greasy, processed, high fat/sugar foods like pizza and snack cakes. Can Jamie, save her, her town and spark a food revolution in America? “We don’t want to sit around and eat lettuce all day.” – radio show host in WV, as …

I finally got to try New York City's new gluten-free bakery, which is now called Tu-lu's Gluten Free Bakery (was Tully's, they had to change their name because of a copyright infringment issue), twice, in fact. The space is as adorable as the owl cupcake tree art would predict. It's cozy, with a few seats where you can eat. They serve paninis, cupcakes, brownies, muffins, cookies and cakes. Click here to see more photos from my Flickr set. You can also follow them @tulusbakery on Twitter and on Facebook . Cupcakes come in five flavors: red velvet, vanilla/strawberry, peanut butter frosting/chocolate cake, chocolate frosting/vanilla cake and...I forget the last one. They also have mini cupcakes, but go early for those. They're $1.25 and totally adorable - I really liked the peanut butter/chocolate, closely followed by the chocolate frosting on vanilla cake. The peanut butter frosting wasn't too sweet, and it was in perfect proportion on the mini cupcakes. Whether you're gluten-free or not, if you like peanut butter and chocolate, you'll want to check that out. The red velvet was decent, it's not really my thing so ...

I wanted to try this Red Velvet recipe from the other day again for a few reasons: I had green food coloring and figured it would be fun for St. Patrick’s Day. Many of you asked if the red velvet cake recipe could be used for cupcakes, so I wanted to find out for you for sure. I wanted to try the cooked frosting that a lot of you recommended over the cream cheese version and I had all of these… Tiny shamrock sprinkles . They just had to be used before another St. Pat’s day passed by. A little liquid food coloring in green. For the red velvet cake I used two bottles, but one was enough for the green. (P.S. This food coloring works much better than the time I tried to use icing colors .) For the cupcake version I used one cup of oil instead of 1 1/2 to see how it would be with less. So far so good. Too good. Man, I never get cupcakes this puffy when I want them. Look at that. Lucky I guess...
