It’s Raining Cupcakes by Lisa Schroeder

8913ac67e904b0 o.gif 99x150 Its Raining Cupcakes by Lisa Schroeder

In addition to cupcake murder mystery Sprinkle with Murder , another book in a completely different genre came out last week, Lisa Schroeder’s middle grade novel It’s Raining Cupcakes , geared toward kids ages 7-12. There’s lots of fun cupcake moments here, and even a (perceived) rivalry between the protagonist Isabel’s bakery, It’s Raining Cupcakes, and a major brownie chain. Hopefully we’ll have an interview here soon with Lisa Schroeder about her inspiration for the book. I’d recommend it to kids in that age range (and adults who love cupcakes). In addition to baking, it’s about perseverance, being true to yourself, and family. Here’s my review: It’s Raining Cupcakes is a fun story about a young girl trying to stake her place in her family and in the world, as her mother gets ready to open a cupcake bakery and her best friends goes to camp, having adventures without her. Isabel dreams of traveling, but she’s never left her small Ohio town. Instead, she reads about other cities and conjures the day she’ll get a passport of her very own. She befriends neighbors and her aunt who share their travel tips, then decides to enter a baking contest…

Lady Gaga cupcakes for "Paparazzi" video

Speaking of Lady Gaga cupcakes , I found these on Deviant Art. I wonder what Lady Gaga’s favorite kind of cupcake is? Something outrageous, surely. Here’s what the artist wrote : Here are the six super-sparkly bejeweled fondant cupcakes I did for a Lady Gaga video, the song “Paparazzi”, I believe. It was fairly tedious, and atypical for me, but fun! Six Lady Gaga Cupcakes by ~ GoldDust12 on deviant ART

Et Tu, O-Town?

f5257007a0e+lady.jpg 112x150 Et Tu, O Town?

I feel I should prepare you in some way for today’s Wreck. Hm. Let’s see… Oh! I know. How about this: Think of a place. A happy place. A place where chocolate-dipped demon mummies can never, ever reach you – much less wrap you in their fudgy arms and squeeze the life-breath out of you. Are you imagining that happy place? Are you there? Ok , good. You may now proceed. AAAAAAUUUUGGGHHH !! THINK OF THE HAPPY PLACE! THINK OF THE HAPPY PLACE!!! Ahem. Yes, it IS cake. Forty six pounds of cake, to be precise, and fifty five pounds of chocolate ganache . It’s a testament to the baker’s skill that I could never get within arm’s reach of this thing, for fear of it suddenly coming to life like in Night at the Museum. Still, you’ve got to appreciate the humor of where they chose to start cutting: “Hey, girl, you have one sweet piece of… [noticing onlookers] …uh…shoulder blade.” Thanks to Wreckporter Jessica Y., who featured it here in her article for Orlando Weekly, and also to Paul J., the baker/sculptor, who’s been an awfully good sport about …

Gluten free cupcakes at Tu-lu’s Gluten Free Bakery

3c1bc9871de9a9c9.jpg 112x150 Gluten free cupcakes at Tu lus Gluten Free Bakery

I finally got to try New York City’s new gluten-free bakery, which is now called Tu-lu’s Gluten Free Bakery (was Tully’s, they had to change their name because of a copyright infringment issue), twice, in fact. The space is as adorable as the owl cupcake tree art would predict. It’s cozy, with a few seats where you can eat. They serve paninis, cupcakes, brownies, muffins, cookies and cakes. Click here to see more photos from my Flickr set. You can also follow them @tulusbakery on Twitter and on Facebook . Cupcakes come in five flavors: red velvet, vanilla/strawberry, peanut butter frosting/chocolate cake, chocolate frosting/vanilla cake and…I forget the last one. They also have mini cupcakes, but go early for those. They’re $1.25 and totally adorable – I really liked the peanut butter/chocolate, closely followed by the chocolate frosting on vanilla cake. The peanut butter frosting wasn’t too sweet, and it was in perfect proportion on the mini cupcakes. Whether you’re gluten-free or not, if you like peanut butter and chocolate, you’ll want to check that out. The red velvet was decent, it’s not really my thing so …

Nutella cupcake at Village Tart

1c50dfd990b7750d.jpg 112x150 Nutella cupcake at Village Tart

Last night I ate dinner at Village Tart , and after I was pretty full, but I could not resist the Nutella cupcake. What’s interesting about it is that while Nutella itself is very thick, this frosting is light, but rich tasting. It’s not overwhelming, and the cake is moist and chocolatey (sometimes people get the moist, but forget the flavor in their chocolate cakes). Definitely save room for dessert here! Cupcakes are $3.25 each. See their menu here.

St. Patrick’s Day, smiley face and bird cupcakes at Cities Cupcake Boutique in Knoxville

17f9a19c9909d8 o.jpg 150x112 St. Patricks Day, smiley face and bird cupcakes at Cities Cupcake Boutique in Knoxville

Cities Cupcake Boutique in Knoxville, Tennessee, is celebrating St. Patrick’s Day (March 17th) with some fun green cupcakes, and they also have others like the smiley faces that are popping with color and sure to make you, well, smile. These are some of my favorites from their Facebook page . Their cute shtick for their main cupcakes is that each is named after a city, such as: Carmel : Have you ever been to Carmel-By-the-Sea in California? You can feel the salty sea spray and experience the breathtaking view of the rugged Pacific coast along the PCH. We take our creamy caramel icing and smooth it onto a yellow cupcake, pop on a French vanilla pirouline cookie and caramel-a-holics can simply indulge. Key West : Calling all Key Lime fans. Our white cupcake is filled with zesty key lime curd and topped with luscious, key lime cream cheese icing. You can almost feel the flip flops on your sandy toes with this one! Geneva : The wintry season brings crackling fireplaces, freshly cut pine and our spicy gingerbread Geneva Cities Cupcake. This moist cupcake is frosted with sweet cream cheese…

Brooklyn Parents To Have Bake Sale To Protest New Rules

22868e975c1d9703.jpg 150x112 Brooklyn Parents To Have Bake Sale To Protest New Rules

From YourNabe.com Next week, Brooklyn parents will protest the city Department of Education’s (DOE) new bake sale rules — by making cupcakes. On March 18 from 4-6 p.m. , parents are expected to pack City Hall for a “bake-in rally.” They’re outraged that the DOE now allows Parent-Teacher Associations (PTA) to regularly sell prepackaged snacks, including Doritos and Pop-Tarts, but homemade desserts may be sold just once a month. “This regulation mandates that if we want to raise money for our schools, we have to buy and sell junk food to our children! Our cookies and banana bread aren’t good enough,” asserted the East Village parents behind www.nycgreenschools.org . “Our children cannot receive the message that junk food is healthier for them than foods cooked at home. This will only encourage a lifetime of bad eating habits.” “I would love to have each of your schools bring out at least 30 parents with their children for the rally,” said Elizabeth Puccini, a protest organizer. The DOE prefers prepackaged snacks because they display nutritional information, whereas homemade grub does not. Brooklyn parents aren’t so supportive of the new rules. “How anyone can laud the nutritional merits of a Pop-Tart is beyond me,” …
